NANA PLAZA
|
|
The human zoo that is the area in front of
Nana Entertainment Plaza can only be partially captured on camera - the rest will require witness; as taxis and tuk-tuks nudge their way into the street-crowd to pick up and drop off the flux of nightcrawlers. Food and insect sellers vie for space with bikini and toy vendors on overcrowded sidewalks, as buy-outs on the arms of their johns, thread past, heading for nearby short-time hotels. Transgenderite whores mingle with the usual crowd of street hookers as the night heats up. Children selling roses and mali garlands tug on shirtsleeves like puppies on your cuff, while Surin elephants and their mahouts wander through it all, begging. Street touts crowd around to thrust tattered, full-color massage parlor brochures at passers-by, along with offers of free taxi rides.....umm, and "cigarettes". The occasional evangelist on a soapbox telling us something about Alpha's and Omega's Kingdom Come; oh, there's a fire down below... Bandaged derelict amputees looking for handouts drag themselves on their stomachs through their vertical brethren, who step smartly around and over them on their way to Night's pinker pleasures. Mondo Cane in a new hat; one begins to understand why Bernard Trink didn't give a hoot.
The Nana Entertainment Plaza complex is highlighted in saturated color in the above photo (satellite pix courtesy Google Earth).

But say what you will, Nana Plaza has continued to grow in size and reputation since the first bars relocated there in mid-1982. And in reviewing our records, we see that our original maps of Nana Plaza and other Night Entertainment Areas are now outdated. To that end, we shall endeavor this month to update the NEP maps for your information and use.

Spotlight On The Limelight
"FROM WHENCE TO WHEN ?"
Greetings, Midnite,
A couple of close friends and myself are regular visitors to Thailand for many years and I seem to remember that the Limelight (one of my favorite clubs) closed long before the Pepperment Lounge. My buddys say it was the other way around. What say you?
Tks,

Hello BBS
We say, we hope your friends didn't bet anything they needed. The Limelight closed in August of 1997, while the Pepperment Bistro & Club closed a little over a year later; November of 1998. Read on below, we have included a recent pic of the old Pepperment "Lounge".
Best,

The Lipstick has succumbed to Darwin's harsh imperative. This of course was not the Lipstick of old (Pink Lady), which many aging residents may remember (which closed in August of 2001), but rather just another of the subsequent attempts to revitalize the name (same upstairs location, however). There are no immediate plans to reopen.
PATPONG I
The second floor Club 66, nee October 2007, came out of the gates with coyote door girls and big screen dance video and looked good to go. However that was then, this is now. -Now only shadows dance within - we wish them a soft landing, wherever....
PATPONG I
The Thigh Bar have run off the scum vendors encroaching onto the sidewalk in front of their A Go-Go bar, and have nailed up some 21st Century neon. Lookin' good.
PATPONG I
'The Peppermint'
This, unfortunately, is a 'sign of times past' - the Peppermint Bistro & Club departed this unearthly midnite coil in November of 1998. We noted last evening that they still hadn't taken down the old neon, so we took the opportunity to supplement our photo archives....

PATPONG I
The Chill Chill Pub & Pool opened on The Ramp with party balloons, et al, this last month. From what we could tell, they have a fairly substantial pool crowd each evening. They are located in what once was the Coyoty Spicy Girls (Tik-Ko) digs. Welcome to the sharkpool.

Door Art Of The Month

The Rawhide (now written as a single word...) have redone the interior - you would never know they had a fire on New Year's Day. Both interior and exterior decorations are first rate. Welcome them back to Party Town.

SOI COWBOY
The Spice Girls have supplemented their already copious neon - this time employing mirrors effectively. As the sign projects out over the Soi, we wonder where this all might be leading....
SOI COWBOY
The spirit house was there first, but was the bar named after the book, or was the book (Spirit House) named after the bar or the spirit house? Over to you, Christopher....
NANA PLAZA
The Sphinx has supplemented their neon with this ground-level addition. (One for our photo archives.)
SOI KATOEY
Opening in December of 2000, the Bacchus had a good run at it; nevertheless in the end, they found a way out from under it all, and sold out lock, stock and chrome barstool to the Music Station Bar & Pool. When we passed by the other night, the Music Station were about three days away from opening night, so they should be opening right about....now. It remains to be seen whether Fate will roll them sevens or nines; nevertheless, wish them luck.
SOI DEAD ARTISTS - SOI 33
The Sweet Mango has given up all vestiges of "Alice" (except on the Thai Sign). They have changed the smaller sign over the door to read S. Mango - modus operandi unchanged.
SOI DEAD ARTISTS - SOI 33
Harry's Bar & Grill, which took over the old Blu-Bar-BQ digs in July of 2006 put up a valiant fight, but finally ran out of gas. A very comfortable Nitespot, suffering only from location, location, location. Hope they find things a little more to their liking a little further on down the road a piece.
SOI DEAD ARTISTS - SOI 33
The Crazy Girl Bar (tentative name only) has taken up in the old 52 Club haunts. They say they will have a brand-new bit of neon up in a matter of days. They also say they are a bit skittish about entering into, say, an 18-month lease, and will attempt to go month to month until there is a readout on the longevity of Washington Square (the old rumor about feuding sibling owners persists, so, if true, a decision on this Night Entertainment Area will have to wait until such feuding is resolved....).
WASHINGTON SQUARE
The pleasant new management of the old Angel Bar say they will be opening right about.... now. They do not envision a name change. Let's hope Fate deals them all aces and faces.
QUEEN'S PARK PLAZA - SOI 22
The tiny-tot beggars occasionally still come into Soi Eden from Sukhumvit Road (depending on their minders), but be careful, there is the occasional light-fingered one...or two...
SOI EDEN - SOI 7/1 SUKHUMVIT
An unnamed Pool Bar has opened up in the old Siam Angel Boy digs, which closed two months ago. It remains to be seen whether this is temporary while they search for a new lessee - or....
