Graffiti  -BKK's Midnite Vandals - #80

Midnight Hour had got the word a couple of months back that the Bourbon Street had moved from Washington Square to Soi Ekamai (Sukhumvit Soi 63).   We finally steeled ourselves for the trip out there to see how Doug was getting along.   We were apprehensive - we knew the Bourbon Street food would be great, but we remembered Soi Ekamai as an entertainment backwater.   What we found was an entirely different animal.

Take a look at the NEW Bourbon Street .....

We took the back way to Bourbon Street, up from Petchburi Road, noticing on the way more than a dozen Night Entertainment Venues on Soi Ekamai itself - most of them new since our last visit.   We knew immediately that we would have to do an 'official' Midnight Hour survey - there was just too much going on.

There was a time that we thought Soi Ekamai (Soi 63) was just too far out.   But things have changed.   First, there is now ample reason to be in that part of town (as you will see below), and second, Soi Ekamai is easy to access by Sky Train.

Door Art Of The Month
Award

The Sherbet is, from all appearances, a 'smooth operator' - their Door Art Award is well deserved - attractive, well lit, and prominently displayed.   A real eye-catcher.

  SOI   EKAMAI  -  SUKHUMVIT  63

Developmentally, the consensus is Soi Ekamai is the overflow from Soi Thonglo, just down the way, and all appearances are that this is true.   There is a variety of different types of Night Entertainment Venues.   From various massage parlors and spas all the way up to the more exclusive member clubs.   See our comments on some of the photos as we go along.
  SOI   EKAMAI  -  SUKHUMVIT  63

There have been a few 'night club' type places on Ekamai for several years, (remember the New Year's Eve fire at the Santika in the early hours of 2009?)   But - without us noticing - things have continued to grow, and grow rapidly, since that time.   In 2009, those few venues on Ekamai were almost exclusively Thai entertainment - not that foreigners were barred, it is just that very few ventured down that relatively dark, relatively out-of-the-way soi.   This is not the case today - and things are progressing quickly - especially at the Sukhumvit Road end of Ekamai.   With the opening of Bourbon Street, and with Durty Nellys Irish Pub almost across the way from them (see our map, above), Ekamai in the evenings will see a number of farang revellers - including week nights....
  SOI   EKAMAI  -  SUKHUMVIT  63

Midnight Hour of course had a close look at Soi Ekamai these last few nights - with regard whether it, or a part of it could be considered to be an "Expat Night Entertainment Area".   While the density of bars around the Sub-Soi 5 area is more than at other parts of Ekamai, even this area has not reached a "critical mass' of Night Entertainment Venues.   (A look at our map might be deceiving - bars that appear close together are in fact not) - Soi Ekamai is a very long soi.)   That, and of course, there are currently relatively few expats out and about in this part of Ekamai.

  SOI   EKAMAI  -  SUKHUMVIT  63

Nevertheless, it goes without saying that the Midnight Hour recommends a visit, or more than one visit, to Ekamai, but to explore the entire soi, you would need an automobile or a motorcycle.

  SOI   EKAMAI  -  SUKHUMVIT  63

Below you will find photos of some of the more prominent Night Entertainment Venues on Soi Ekamai.

The on-again, off-again upstairs branch of Nice Massage is.... 'on-again'.   There's no telling when they will be open (or closed) - which would make for difficult planning if you were considering going there for a massage....

The King's Garden, closed for renovations last month, has reopened - at least the front bar beer section has.   They have done a good job on the new neon.   The katoey A Go-Go inside has not yet opened for business.   Yes, you read that correctly - Patpong II's first katoey A Go-Go.   As we predicted, there has not been a name change.   All the best as they come back onto the firing line.

    - A GROWTH INDUSTRY

The sign at King's Garden reads:

    Receiving applications for employees:
    Dancing 'girls-of-the-second-kind'
Waiters, Bartenders, Public Relations, Door Men - Good pay

      PATPONG  II

The Peuan (Friend) has had a soft opening in the old The Rock digs (up on The Ramp).   They don't have any neon up yet, but that - we are told - is coming soon (one can see the old Dome Juniority sign above the door, if one is looking closely, however).   Welcome to the machine.
      PATPONG  II

The Top Light, which opened a couple of months ago, now has some new neon nailed up.   May they persevere....

A "for the archives" pic of the Spice Girls - note how the use of mirrors is employed to double the neon fun, while blocking out the signage of the next door neighbor.   Several bars on Soi Cowboy are now using this technique.   May they continue to rock 'n roll.

Strap's has made good on their original promise to glass in the premises and present A Go-Go dancing.   They just may have the best single-shophouse A Go-Go remaining in the expat community....

    MAP
The Balcony (or is it "Balcony The"?) has an all-night happy hour - at least on the other side of the soi in front of where the old Rome Club used to be.   They don't say what their happy hour consists of, however, and as we have seen - it means a great many things to a great many different folk.

The upstairs Joy (in the S33 Compact Hotel compound) is re-closed again this month. We suspect they work on odd-numbered months.....

SOI  DEAD  ARTISTS - SOI  33

Also upstairs in the S33 Compact Hotel compound, the Zoo has it's lights on, but nobody's home.   Literally.   We'll take a look back later to see if this means they are closed, or if they are just "closed".....   We will get back atcha next time.
SOI  DEAD  ARTISTS - SOI  33

We confirm (from last month) that the Gauguin has run headlong into the Abyss.   Greener pastures, ladies.

      WASHINGTON  SQUARE
    MAP
Washington Square has been slowly closing down as a Night Entertainment Area for the last several months due to a major land redevelopment by the owners.   Most of the Nitespots have already either closed or relocated; the Area has dropped below the "critical mass" required to sustain customer interest.   Midnight Hour will no longer report on this Night Entertainment Area on a monthly basis.   However we will continue to track that area and report any additional closures of existing bars as they occur.

      QUEEN'S  PARK  PLAZA
    MAP
The Jasmine Bar has just opened on both sides of the entrance to the Baan Beer 22 at the rear of the compound.   It remains to be seen whether Fate's tumbling dice will bring them sevens or nines.....   Welcome them to the sharkpool.

      QUEEN'S  PARK  PLAZA

The Sport 20-2 bar beer has (temporarily?) closed.   And by that, we mean, they seem to do a brisk business on the weekends....   We'll keep an ear to the ground on this one........
      QUEEN'S  PARK  PLAZA

The Superior Bar opened last month (see last issue), but it took them a little longer to get some neon up.   Now looking good - all is well.   Let the good times roll.
      QUEEN'S  PARK  PLAZA

The XXXX Bar is also closed - at least technically - we see that they still have all their chattel within.   We suspect they will be reopening forthwith.   We'll keep an eyeball peeled and advise next time around.

The Bangkok Beat is a successful late-evening Nitespot at the top of Soi Eden, and their Ladies' Night is one of the reasons.   There's good rockin' tonight.

    VICARIOUS ART CRIMES   # 80

    MIDNITE HOUR's

    GRAFFITI - ME ?
(An "Introduction" to Graffiti for those interested
in the "Art" and the "Controversy".)

Perhaps one of the most extraneous and arcane forms of Night Entertainment is that of graffiti.   Often illegal, frequently artistic, occasionally humorous, and most of the time controversial.   Graffiti is not a form of 'entertainment' that all will enjoy.   Many see it as vandalism - plain and simple, while others see it as an art form, or 'art brut' - a street sub-set of Modern Art.      (....Continued....)

    GRAFFITI IN THE NEWS

    Bangkok Graf Expo
    - OUR OWN GRAF ART SPRAYDOWN

It is hard to know what exactly to call the extravaganza that will take place at Bangkok's own Siam Center this June .   A public demonstration of spraycan art, yes.   A competition, yes.   Entertainment, yes.   A graffiti workshop, yes.   Several other events, yes.

Siam Center's Design Forward and Isuzu will be sponsoring this, the brainchild of the graffiti artists who created Wall Lords Thailand 2012.   And they will be calling it, surprise, surprise, Siam Center Design Forward Presents Isuzu Wall Lords Thailand Graffiti 2012.   A little unwieldy, don't you think?   Starts to sound like Thai boxers naming themselves after car battery companies.....   How about just Wall Lords Thailand 2012, for short?

So, here's the lowdown.   Local graf crews of two artists (no solos, no threesomes, etc.) can register to enter the competition and compete for prizes at the Wall Lords' Thailand website http://www.walllordsthailand.com until 8 June 2012.   After that, you're SOL.   Competitor's names should appear on the list of accepted applicants at the same website - on or before 72 hours after (three days later).   Crews wishing to compete will be required to submit photos with their applications (read the rules for details).

The submitted applications and photos will be evaluated on 12 - 14 June by the judges, and nine crews will be selected for the spraydown on the 16th.    Once you're in, you're in, so get ready.   Crews will be required to complete their pieces before 22 June .   Judges will be looking for, and at, 'theme pieces', throw ups' and 'hand styles', so those of you who have it all together should definitely enter.

The winning crews will be announced on 22 June , with cash prizes for the top two crews.   First prize is Baht 20,000 and second place runners up will take home Baht 10,000.   But that's not the end of it - first and second place crews will also get air tickets to compete for further glory (and cash) in China.   The final in China will host graf crews from China (of course), Korea, Indonesia, Singapore (would they even have any?) Malaysia, and Taiwan (surprise!).   The competition there will run from 22 - 26 December 2012 (it's going to be COLD, gents....)   Final award ceremonies will be held in Shanghai on the 24th of December - with the prize money jumping to Baht 30,000 for first place crew and Baht 20,000 for the runners up.

But Bangkok's event will not be just about watching spraycan wizards work their magic, there will also be entertainment and demonstrations, to include live bands, DJ's, break dancers, skateboarders and rap groups, not necessarily in that order, or any order at all.   It probably goes without saying that a film will be made of the proceedings.

After the actual competition, a graf workshop, also on 22 June , will be held with the nine competing crews.   The workshop will be hosted by internationally known graffiti artists, some of whom are from internationally known crews.   Some names you may remember : Chip 7, Roids, and crews MSK and Ha.

All said and done, however, this is graffiti art - by actual living, breathing, practicing graf artists - but in that it is commissioned, and in that is not 100% free choice of subject material and location, it is not true graffiti.   Which, by definition, is "unauthorized markings on others' property".   Nevertheless, we wouldn't miss it for the world.   And neither should you.
