ANOTHER THREAD IN THE BANGKOK FABRIC

- We are indebted to an anonymous contributor.   Photo in public domain - LINE social networking.

On Sunday evening, 4 Aug 2013, Tim 'Wanchai' Young died of heart failure in his bachelor apartment above Patpong Road.   After at least two previous heart attacks and four heart surgeries, to include the implanting of a number of stents, he was finally taken down at age (approximately) 66.

Tim at rest, Wat Chonlaprathan Rangsarit

Most of those who knew Tim, knew the 'Pillar Of Patpong' Tim, who had an apartment - his home - in a reserved corner of a Patpong short-time hotel (originally the 3M), and who had his hold-mail delivered to the next-door Madrid Bar.   This latter hold-mail location worked out ideally for him, as he also used their phone for his business phone in the days before mobile phones.

Tim's photo at the funeral was taken circa 1970.

But not everyone knew of Tim's Night Entertainment entrepreneurship, both here and in Viet Nam.   So, let's start at the beginning of his Southeast Asian adventure.   Originally sent to Viet Nam in the mid-late 1960's as a guest of Uncle Sam, he immediately put in for 'Club Manager'.   However, in the Army, just as no request goes unheeded, neither is it approved - he was (re)assigned to Tactical Operations at 2nd Field Forces, adjacent to USAG Long Binh.

The plethora of wreaths of condolence far exceeds the area
under the tent originally provided for that purpose.

His tour of duty behind him, like many of us, he wasn't looking for the Government-provided Freedom Bird back to the Land Of The Big PX.   He instead, went to work for the US Army's largest civilian contractor in Viet Nam, Pacific Architects & Engineers, Inc. (PA&E).   Their employment agreements with employees were 18 months, and records show Tim worked at PA&E's ROK Valley Installation near Qui Nhon as Supply Manager through 1969 into early 1970.   And here's the little known factoid :   His PA&E job as Supply Manager was his day job.   His real job was part owner of a Nitespot in Qui Nhon called Ann's Company, but was referred to by the regulars as just 'The Casino'.   It was located on the beach (in Tim's words, they called it 'Shit Beach') near the airstrip motorpool.   Some of you may remember it.....

Tim's last drink awaits.....   A classic pic -

But fast-forward a few brief months, Tim had separated from PA&E and moved lock stock and barrel to Thailand.   And it didn't take him long; soon after his arrival, he opened a bar / disco in a wide spot in the road (a very popular wide spot) they called Kilo Sip (Kilometer 10) just outside U Thapao Air Base in Sattahip.   And the name?   Ann's Company Disco.   Some of the photos herein are from Tim and are dated '1970 - Sattahip'.   Tim stayed there until 1972 (varying dates from Tim and other sources on this), before moving on again.   Destination?   Bangkok.

Once in Bangkok, he wasted no time - it wasn't long before he had leased what up until then had been the Reeve Hankins Insurance Company (before that it was the USIS library) and opened his third Night Entertainment Venue, The Bad Apple A Go-Go.   He would eventually sell out to the Safari in 1976 (which is still there today).

In the following years, he became a working stiff - and a family man, raising a young daughter.   And in 1991, when his daughter, Tata Young won the Thailand Junior Singing Contest his life took off in another direction entirely.   He became the possessive and meticulous manager of Tata's meteoric rise in popularity and local singing fame.   And did he have any regrets?   Just one - before 1991, they used to call him 'Wanchai', and now they called him 'Tata's Dad'....   Tim would groan, "Go figure, I use to have my own name!"   This of course wasn't a real complaint; he still referred to her as, "My Baby Girl".

We republish below a note from Tim to us - as it has a number of references to the 'Old Patpong" Night Entertainment Scene and is of significant historical value.   And for those few of you remaining old Patpong hands out there, we guarantee you will see a few eye-openers - bars and venues you had completely forgotten about.   We know we had.....

Dear N,

A Real Classic Photo!

What was located in the same building, before the Safari?

Well like I've always said, "The Bad Apple", run by Khun Wanchai, and before 1970 the Bad Apple was "Reeve Hankins Insurance Company", and before that it was the "USA Information Library" coupled with original Super Star building which is now the Thigh Bar.

Please Note: The location of the Original "Charlie's" Super Star Bar (brings back real memories), then next came the "Bad Apple".   Then came the "Tien Tien Restaurant", which before that it was the "Marco Polo Night Club", now the "Twilo".   The current "Super Star" used to be a "Members Club" (the name? Ambassador? ), before that it was "Everett Shipping Company" and before that it was "The IBM Building" Thailand).   Further on down was "Majestic Custom Tailors", then The Famous "Grand Prix" which is now the "Kings 1".   Air France is now King's Corner.

Opposite side of the street starting from Silom Road: was, "Amor"....., and before that it was called "Lucky Strike", and now it's a "7 Eleven".    "Air Vietnam" became the (Texxan) now a "Big Bag Shop", then there was "Barnn", which later became "Blue Jeans", then "Cozy Corner" and was next to the alley way that lead to "Bangkok Christian Hospital", which also led up to the "Scene Night Club" second & third floors, which later became the "Executive Association of Thailand" ("EAT" Club) - which before that it was the "TOSCO Members Club", and now is the "New Madrid Apartments".   Below was "The Executive Room" and the "Jockey Club" next to "The Madrid".   Next was "Napoleon", next to "Derby King Lounge", next to "The Sea Saw Restaurant", then the "Barn?" & "Black Jack" which is now "Gold Fingers" and many-many more names moving down the street towards Suriwong Rd.

...............

The Street really has changed a lot, huh?

Wanchai

         And a final note from Tim;

" When I die and go to the gates of Heaven, I'm going to ask the Lord, 'Please give me back all my lady drink money, buy-offs and tips for the lady of the night and I promise God, I'll be a good boy and won't ask you for anything else!'   Go figure where I'll be headed?

........and like they say,   'The Rest is HISTORY'! "

This should be of special interest to those local xenophobes and farang kee-nok's who would have us believe the GI's were the scourge that brought "NightEntertainment" to Bangkok during the VietNamWar.   This totally delightful advertisement was brought to our attention by contributor "Lafayette" who found it on Page 52 in the August 1958 edition of the BangkokBulletin guide book.   Noting, of course, the fans (no air conditioners in 1958) and such other details as the placement of the hand-holes in the steam cabinet... which will have significance to only a few of you old timers.....

Patpong's Play Boy

Hi,

Just trying to research a club from the late sixties in Bangkok called the Playboy…. does anyone have any memories or photos?   Very popular with R&R GIs.

Cheers,

Ian
Hi Ian,

We were sure we remembered a "Playboy" on Patpong 1 from many years ago, so we rummaged around in our old photos and found the above pic showing the Play Boy (and several other of PPI's great old bars).   This pic, not in good focus, was taken around 1980, however, we do not know which years it was in operation.   In asking around, others remember other Playboy bars in Bangkok at other locations.   If we get anything further on this, we will forward to you.

Best,
Boge

A few months back, an unnamed bar was operating out of the old upstairs Lipstick (long closed down) - but last month, they stuck up a sign which read Pussy Special (see our last issue).   This month, that sign has been torn down and the new Pussy Magic sign is up in it's place.   Nowadays, unlike the old days of the Lipstick, one needs to exercise caution when visiting the upstairs bars on Patpong 1 - make sure you are going to be billed only for what you agreed to in the first place.
      PATPONG  I

Opening newly on the 2nd floor, King's Body House takes over the digs of the Nice Massage II which closed a few months back - which, come to think of it, was also a King's Group venue....   Massage parlors on PPI have proven a slippery slope - wish them luck.
      PATPONG  I

      PATPONG  II
    MAP
King's Garden A Go-Go located in Soi Bookstore (between PPI and PPII) is new in signage only.   They used to be an integral part of the King's Garden facing out on PPII.   May they continue to hustle.
      PATPONG  II

The dimly lit stairway up to the unique Black Pagoda (should you not take the lift) is strewn with graffiti art from a few seasons ago.   This young lady can be found on the 3rd floor, and appears to be pointing the way in to the Black Pagoda itself.
      PATPONG  II

The S.T.V. Beer Bar (Memphis Queen), a mostly katoey bar beer, is all shutters padlocked to the concrete.   Could it be their day has come and gone?   We'll take a look-see next time around and get back atcha.

The Lighthouse is finally getting around to nailing up some new neon (much needed, when considering the competition).   Looking good.   May they continue to rock and roll.

    Speaking of neon...
... IS THERE SUCH A THING AS "TOO MUCH" ?

    Award

We could see this coming, and we weren't disappointed....    The Angel Witch Rock Dancers II, professional as always, is head and shoulders above the rest in the new neon department this month.   And for the historical record, the new Angel Witch is on the ground floor in the old Holly Wood Rock digs.   May the fates deal them all aces and faces.

    NANA   PLAZA

The Nana Entertainment Plaza neon is now the same coming and going.   Another pic for the archives....
NANA  PLAZA - (Sukhumvit  SOI  4)

The Tokyo Player neon, when view from that angle on that particular night proved to be a bizarre photo opportunity.   May they keep on keeping on.
NANA  PLAZA - (Sukhumvit  SOI  4)

The Playskool is shut down and torn asunder by the ongoing renovations.   It remains to be seen if it will reopen as the Playskool, or as a brand new Nitespot.    But either way, it has had a good run for the money : it took over from the Mon Cherie Music Lounge Go Go Bar in July of 1995 after a one-month renovation.
    - File photo
NANA  PLAZA - (Sukhumvit  SOI  4)

The Chili has opened on the second floor in the Erotica Pool House digs (closed this last month).   The format is -once again- A Go-Go.   Welcome Chili to the shark pool.
NANA  PLAZA - (Sukhumvit  SOI  4)

The Erotica has once again embellished their neon - all looking good (and more visible to foot traffic, we might add).   The rock still rocks.

The Ball In Hand has finally given up the ghost after a successful run of many years.   Located upstairs in the Rajah Hotel outbuilding, it will (it is rumored) be reopening soon as an Arab nightclub.   (?!)
      SOI   NANA

OK. D. Massage is the name given to the massage parlor "Thai Massage" we had earlier noted being next to Finnegan's Irish Pub.   This is apparently only the assignment of the name, not a name change.   So noted......   May they continue to slip and slide....

A bar that should be busier, but for some reason isn't - Bas Living Room.   It is a well-appointed bar - perhaps a little too deep in the soi for any significant foot traffic.   May they persevere.   A photo for our archives.

Two months ago the Miraku Massage closed, only to be replaced by the Cosy Massage.   Last month, the Cosy Massage was replaced by the Miraku Massage.   This month the Miraku Massage is closed down and the insides have been ripped out during the currently proceeding renovations.   Only time will what will be opening up at that location....

    SOI  22 - (Sukhumvit)

Chaowang Massage has opened up in what was, up until a couple of months ago, the Happy Bar.   Welcome them to the neon circus.
    SOI  22 - (Sukhumvit)

Bua Sawan Massage has opened up in the old Hello Massage digs.   Soi 22 seems to have more massage parlors per running foot than anywhere in Bangkok.   Welcome them to the Bright Lights, Big City.

The Karaoke 9 has opened upstairs from it's parent Thai Seafood Restaurant on the ground floor.   It doesn't look like the combination is really going viral... but let's not rush to judgment....   Located next door to the Pan Pan Italian Restaurant.
SOI  DEAD  ARTISTS - SOI  33

The Joy has reopened for the umpteenth time (meaning it has closed umpteen times as well).   Nevertheless, it is a fact that it has reopened, so I guess I am duty bound to report it.....   Ho hum......

SOI  DEAD  ARTISTS - SOI  33

You've heard of the pub with no beer.   But have you heard of the bar with no bar?   The Bar does not have a bar.   That's because it is an Italian Restaurant.   Located in the back of Soi Pan Pan, it is going to have stiff competition from the Pan Pan Italian Restaurant at the top of their soi.   Located in a predominantly Japanese subsoi, no parking, in an area already glutted with Italian Restaurants....    Hmmmmm.....   Something about location, location, location....

What started out a few months ago as an unnamed bar beer area became the Allanda Bar, which became an unnamed beer bar area, which divided into two parts.   The first part - a couple of months ago - became the new location for the Bai Fern Massage (reported herein).   The second part became - just this month - Dark Blue - and we would like to welcome them to the piranha pool.
