BANGKOK EYES PRESENTS -

This, our third revisit to Sukhumvit Soi 8 was not a disappointment. (Our last survey was in October of 2011.) Although not on our monthly survey rounds, it looks like it could be soon... as it approaches that magical 'critical mass'.
This weekend we saw a number of familiar Nitespots, as well as a few Venues that had changed hands in the intervening years. But most importantly, we saw a handful of new "Night Entertainment Venues" coming on line. See also our previous map < link > .
In theory, Soi 8 is ideally situated (location, location, location) - being right on the Nana Skytrain Station - it could therefore 'go viral', entertainment-wise, at any time. Add to that, there are a number of newer up-to-date Night Entertainment Venues - a departure from previous make-shift bar beer formats (...don't get me wrong, we do need a number of these dusty old bar beers to kick back in...).
With the possibility of further real estate utilization between Sukhumvit Road and Stables, to include the two small sois (see map), Soi 8 could soon become a stand-alone Night Entertainment Area in its own right. We'll need to be keeping a closer eye on Soi 8 going forward.
Below are a few representative pics from our current visit to Soi 8.
BANGKOK EYES
Let the July 2017 Follies begin-
Although difficult to tell from this photo (it was just starting to rain when we tripped the shutter) there is a brand new window in the King's Castle II - for all the world to view the ongoing A Go-Go. We wonder how this will be managed by the door touts, what with the many tourists taking photos...
PATPONG 1
Up on The Ramp the King Corner Net, while keeping their old signage, have now nailed up additional signage - reverting back to the old "Royal Salute" nomenclature. Sounds like they may have had a problem with the Sign Gestapos.... May they continue to march....
PATPONG 2
Spanky (the original one born on the now long-extinct Asoke Corner) have finally put up some signage. (They completed their renovations several months ago.) Looking good, let the good times roll....
PATPONG 2
PATPONG 2
A new pic for archives of The Old Dutch Corner - mainly because we heard a rumor... and didn't want to be left short of an adequate photographic record... (On the other hand, whenever you hear a rumor, you should keep in mind it is not worth the paper it is written on...)
SOI COWBOY
The New Lollipop stepped newly into the shoes of Suckers. (Let's face it, these not-so-clever 'Beavis-and-Butthead' bar names like 'Suckers' are rather pathetic - they never seem to last.) Welcome the Lollipop back to the neon circus. Now, will someone please bring back the Bubble Gum?
NANA PLAZA
The upstairs (third-level) Butterflies has just been closed down - for perhaps a month or two, or until an expensive 'consideration' is made by The Men In Too-Tight Uniforms. Apparently, there was an individual under 20 years of age on the premises - the discovery of which brought on the usual dispensation of extra-judicial street justice....
NANA PLAZA
The Mercury Bar is the latest bar to undergo the full snip, becoming the most recent eunuch bar in the Plaza. She now calls herself "Mercury Ladyboy Bar." With the recent gender-bending of Straps, it gives rise to the old question : 'Will Nana Plaza become a Katoey Night Entertainment Area?' Time will be the final arbiter.
NANA PLAZA
As the Rajah Hotel continues molasses-like renovations, another Nitespot (still nameless) has had a soft opening. More on this as we hear of it.... Nevertheless, welcome them to the sharkpool.
SOI NANA
The P's Thai Massage has opened in the recently closed Amsa Massage & Spa. We'll try to get a photo next time around....

SOI NANA
Jupiter 2018, like many of the Nitespots coming on line these days, is sporting digital lighting. The photo below shows an animated screen 2 meters in height. Without accentuating our personal bias more than we already have, we prefer real neon.... May the Jupiter continue to persevere.
SOI KATOEY
Denny's stuffed its last chit in the last plastic cup last month. It survived the closure of Washington Square (located at the Soi 22 entrance) and was one of the first to open up in the Holiday Inn. May Denny's RIP. They were quickly replaced -just days ago- by the unusually named Honny Pup. Located at the top of Soi 22 in the Holiday Inn. May the Honny Pup ride the vicissitudes long and hard...
SOI 22 (Sukhumvit)
The Cave Club, located in the Holiday Inn is once again a darkened hulk. We suspect its previous openings-and-closings were indicative of a slow-motion catastrophic failure. Should it reopen... we shall so note, but for the present, they have been stricken from the rolls.
SOI 22 (Sukhumvit)
The Insanity - of Soi 12 notoriety - has relocated deep into Soi Ambassador - to the white-elephant building just this side of where the Q-Bar used to stand. Wish them success as they cast their dice, once again, against the pitted wall of fate...
SOI AMBASSADOR (Sukhumvit 11)
The below photo shows the just-closed Sport 20-2 and its adjacent bar beer. The main Sport 20-2 (on the left) has become The Lover Bar (owned by the Good Luck group), and the Sport 20-2 bar beer on the right has become the White Bar. We hope to have some better pics next time 'round.
QUEEN's PARK PLAZA (Sukhumvit 22)
The New Ranhime Karaoke Club was in permanent lock-down when we passed by the other evening. It should be noted that it was the last bar to close from just north of Tenderloins all the way up to, and including the old Moulin Rouge - a stretch of six separate Nitespots. This is not just a coincidence due to a slump in the Night Entertainment Industry - a major real estate development encompassing that entire area will be commencing in the near future.
SOI DEAD ARTISTS (Sukhumvit 33)
SOI DEAD ARTISTS (Sukhumvit 33)
The Dozo (Love & Massage) on the 2nd level of the S-33 Compact Hotel has reopened its ground-floor entertainment area. May they continue to prosper.
SOI DEAD ARTISTS (Sukhumvit 33)
The Napoleon Club, surviving its relocation to the old Santana Club digs, has at last met its Waterloo - at least as far as Soi Dead Artists is concerned. They, however, have not disappeared entirely. They have relocated to the tail-end of Soi 39 Sukhumvit (actually Soi 38/1 Petchburi Road). We hope this change of venue will change their luck.
SOI DEAD ARTISTS (Sukhumvit 33)
For those interested in real therapeutic massage, Tarntip Massage & Spa is the only traditional massage parlor on Soi Eden.
SOI EDEN (Sukhumvit 7/1)
A For-The-Archives pic of the New Banana Bar, located on the Surawong Road end of the Twilight Zone.
