In keeping with our stated policy of surveying Sukhumvit Road's lesser entertainment sois on a (somewhat) regular basis, we note that our first survey of Soi 26 was in August 2007, followed up by a return survey in February 2014. So it is quite apparent we don't get down to that end of Sukhumvit Road (at least for official surveys) as often as we should. Be that as it may, each time we survey there, we see great potential for the Soi as an Expat Night Entertainment Area.
Beer Collection is one of the larger (popular) Venues in K Village.
SOI 26 Sukhumvit Rd
With so much time between surveys, we expect significant change. But each time, while there has been change, it has not really been that significant. In 2014 we reported for the first time on K Village and A Square (located at the far, Rama IV Road end of Soi 26). We were most optimistic - we expected that these two areas would become thriving Night Entertainment Areas in their own right. Both commercial developments were full of shops, just very few Nitespots. And once again, this time around we see that, at least as far as Nitespots are concerned, those two areas have stagnated.
The one exception to this relative 'stagnation' is the area at the Sukhumvit Road end of Soi 26 - at the 'dog-leg' going off to the left and the next adjacent subsoi (on the map). Technically speaking the 'dog-leg' is Soi 24/1, but as several of the Venues go through to Soi 26, we have included this Soi in the current, and previous surveys of Soi 26.
Tokyo Hustler is located on the 2nd level in the Japanese commercial area Nihon Machi (see map).
SOI 26 Sukhumvit Rd
We note that the aforementioned Night Entertainment Venues on Soi 24/1 and the through-Venues facing on Soi 26, as well as the Nitespots on the next (unnamed) soi, are mostly Japanese clubs, snacks or massage parlors catering to Oriental clientele. Our source on the ground there says that most of the customers are either Japanese or Chinese, a large part of those coming from the new hotels in that part of Sukhumvit Road.
The Changwon Express is an upstairs 'craft beer' pub in a most unusual setting - just below, and in full view, is a compact surf park (see Video Clip below). It is located in the A Square commercial park, and is popular with the teen and early 20's crowd.

When surveying any 'off-the-beaten-track' Entertainment Area, we have one eye open to the prospect that the area might have reached Critical Mass, and thereby be considered an Expat Night Entertainment Area in its own right. As with previous surveys, Soi 26+Soi 24/1 do not meet the criteria of an Expat Night Entertainment Area - specifically with regards the lack of a contiguous configuration, and a lack of diversity of different types of Night Entertainment. Nevertheless, this should not dissuade nightcrawlers from visiting the Soi for a change of pace.

Below are additional photographs of a few of Soi 26 + Soi 24/1'sNitespots.
The Roots Pub Restaurant is a popular Expat Nitespot located in K Village. The facade is, as can be seen, beautifully crafted, getting the nod for our Door Art of the Month Award for February. Also, as can be seen from the sign, they serve Soul Food - very hard to go wrong...

READER : Sirs,
Ref last month, the best and likely the only complete Nightlife blog on Soi 71. It accurately described the place. Photos as usual, tops. Tks and out here.
MIDNITE HOUR:
Thanks your positive input. We had seen a number of other bits of coverage, so we decided that the best way to present Soi 71 would be to go down and survey on our own - and hang out for an extended number of evenings.
READER : Sir,
Dream Heaven Massage said store #3 opened on Jan 11 (on Soi 33) near the old (closed?) store.
#2 is on the corner of Soi 26 and the 2nd subsoi, which has 101 Premier Massage and the Japanese bars and izakayas. The original owner (a Thai woman) of Dream Heaven sold off the original and Soi 26 stores and retained the Soi 24/1 store. I don't know when this happened but don't think it was recently.
MIDNITE HOUR:
Thanks for your timely input. In addition to the update, you have given us the 'push' needed to (somewhat tardily) get back to Soi 26 to do a re-survey. As you will note in this issue, we have done so, to include a new map - which displays the location of the Dream Heaven. Also, the original Soi 33 venue remains open (see our writeup below in this month's Follies).
READER : Hi,
I just wanted to point out that the links for ' 1 Dec - Soi 23 Running Hot' in "The Archives" section at the foot of the page for both January 2019 and December 2018 currently point to the November page instead of December 2018. Please keep up your excellent work on the The Midnight Hour's Night Entertainment Scene in Bangkok. I look forward reading your latest review and updates on the first of each month. Thank you so much.
MIDNITE HOUR:Greetings,
Many thanks your (most valuable) corrections. We have corrected both links (and the same carried-forward error on our 01 Feb issue). Each of us at Midnite Hour appreciates any input concerning broken links (or for that mater, anything else that might come to mind).
READER : Hello,
Not to be a nit-picker in your otherwise great monthly, but I couldn't help noticing in your 20-years-ago section you spelled 'observatory' as in "Club Habanos And Observatorey" - with an extra 'e'. As they say, "your spell-checker is your friend"... Keep up your good works -
MIDNITE HOUR:Greetings, B,
Thanks for writing in. Your comments on spell-checkers are respectfully noted. However, as you have touched, indirectly, on a Midnite Hour 'idiocyncracy', we will share our deep-dark-secret on the public forum. We reproduce Night Entertainment Venue names exactly as they appear on the primary signage. We emphasize 'primary signage' here, as often there are other names showing on smaller, more obscure signs - often these other names are the legal Thai names. We feel this policy best serves the reader and prospective customers, should they want to locate the given Nitespot. In this case, "Observatorey" was the spelling used by the owner on his primary, and only, signage. As a footnote, the "Club Habanos And Observatorey" didn't last that long as a Nitespot on PP 1 but it was, after many years, reincarnated as Whisgars (Whisky and Cigars) a couple of years back on Sukhumvit Soi 23.
The King's Castle 1 & 2 have embellished their signage to an even greater extent. We wish they would have used real neon instead of cheap-looking LED, but, hey, what do we know? The beat goes on...
As Club Black slowly becomes more visible, so does their signage. This time around we have a graffiti representation - which, by the way, was done by 1UP, which (as graff buffs well know) is one of the better-known graffiti crews in Europe and the Americas (originating in Germany). Club Black is joined at the hip with Black Pagoda upstairs in Patpong 2. Time to rock 'n roll...
PATPONG 2
Gone, but not gone, Patpong Cafe, was closed last month when we surveyed (without posting a sign in the window...). The good news is they were closed only for an extended New Year Holiday. They are currently operating 'business-as-usual'.
This ancient hiring sign precedes even the opening of the Patpong Cafe at this location. It promises the usual: hiring urgently, all different positions, good pay.
Sam's 2000, opened in July 1999 in the Love Scene (or, 'Lao Jaroen') digs , which had then just closed. Presumably they chose the name Sam's 2000 in anticipation of making it to the Millennium - and they are still going strong just on 20 years later... One of the best kept secrets is Sam's 2000 continued with the great Lao Jaroen menu. What with the Old Dutch now gone, you can still get a bite to eat and a pint or two on Soi Cowboy.
SOI COWBOY
In reply to several reader inquiries, the Nitespot that will replace the Old Dutch Corner is currently still under construction, and will likely open in late February or March of this year.
A quick shot for the Archives - Nana Plaza in a rosy glow. Could that 'soft-lighting-look' be due to Bangkok's brand new smog problem? Let that train roll on...
The EQ Late Night Club has reopened after an 8-month so-called "renovation" (they could have rebuilt the entire Nana Hotel in that length of time). Be that as it may, the refurbished digs look good, and the modus operandi unchanged. The lovely receptionist allows as how, on busy nights, they close at -give or take- 04:00 hrs. One of the advantages of operating in a hotel...?
SOI NANA
Two months back, we noted a tiny hole-in-the-wall bar had newly opened just across the street from the Rajah Hotel. Well now it has a name: Lannana. Even so, the sign is almost impossible to spot when walking by. While the interior 'scenery' is friendly and eye-catching, 'lady-dinks' start at Baht 200, which is steeper than many bottom-of-the-scale lady-drinks in Nana Plaza. They may want to revisit their business plan...
It looks like the Sugar Bowl has closed for good this time. But we've been fooled before... we shall keep the books open on them for another month to see what transpires...
Tina, (Soi 22's only A Go-Go), which we reported as 'closed' last month (it was), has reopened, and is going 'pedal-to-the-metal' - sans A Go-Go, as the dancers were nowhere to be found (on our visit the other night)... May they keep on keeping on. It is our continuing recommendation that if a Nitespot is going to close for an hour, or a few days, they should (like barber shops, book stores and beauty parlors) tape a sign on the door to let regular customers know they will return soon - and that they haven't disappeared into the void...
SOI 22
The 59 Bar has taken over from the Five & Nine Bar (more like a name-change, wouldn't you say?) May they continue to shine...
SOI 22
The Honey Bee Bangkok (last month the Honey Bee Massage), the Passion Bangkok (last month the Bangkok Passion Massage), and the Paradise BKK (last month the Paradise Massage) are but some of the victims of the latest sign ges.tapo crackdown -- they (the a.uthorities) have just recently started to object to the word, 'massage' appearing on outdoor signage. The Venues mentioned above are obviously still massage parlors, and are still continuing to operate -- services unchanged and unabated... They are located on Subsoi Lemongrass, just past the Marriott.
SOI 22
The Kiss Bangkok Massage 3 - having just opened newly on Subsoi Hana, must have somehow sneaked under the cobra-stare of the authorities in the recent crackdown on the use of the word 'massage' on exterior signage. Shake it, don't break it, ladies....
SOI 22
The Thai Candy Massage in Soi Lemongrass has completed its move from Subsoi Hana, having finally closed out the Subsoi Hana branch.
What was, two months ago, the Lucky Shot, underwent an ever-so-light renovation, becoming the Pocket Pool. Where I come from, 'pocket pool' has a very specific meaning, and we didn't see any of that going on within, which is probably just as well... Gotsta' get paid...
SOI AMBASSADOR
(Sukhumvit Soi 11)
Indian Tadka (Thai name 'Water Element') is an Indian restaurant. However, later in the evening their outside area at the juncture of Soi 11/1 is becoming a popular place to park one's backside and have a few. A little too soon to tell; is this going to be a 'replacement' for Soi Ambassador'sCheap Charlie's? Although that is highly speculative, stranger things have happened... We also noted a straggling gaggle of freelancers gracing the immediately adjacent premises...
SOI AMBASSADOR
(Sukhumvit Soi 11)
We mentioned in issues past that Happy Station 11 had opened and closed so frequently that we wouldn't mention it again unless it was torn down permanently. Well, it happened. In fact, everything in that tiny walking Soi 11/2 has been torn out. We wish them a soft landing - wherever and whenever that may be... We don't yet know if the soi will be repopulated with bars or restaurants at some time in the future - a wait-and-see item.
Last month we noted stirrings in the then-recently closed The Firm. We speculated that either they were throwing a quiet New Year's party or they were plotting to open a new Nitespot. Well, now we know - the new Lounge Bar is the Thirty Three. Their prime agendum is to encourage customers to buy bottles of quality wine or scotch whiskey (individual drinks are not encouraged). Their lady staff are attractive and attentive, however we are not sure this 'buy-a-bottle' business model is really right for the Soi. At least they didn't have a phalanx of bouncers to intimidate all within eyesight, as did their predecessor. Here's hoping Fate deals them all aces and faces...
[ An amusing note for those who read Thai - I mentioned to the staff that their Thai language sign, when viewed from the street reads, "Da Da" ...which they didn't' find amusing. - it is actually the Thai numerals "33". ]
SOI DEAD
ARTISTS (Sukhumvit 33)
'Exclusive Entertainment Club' Pent 33 was closed last month when we passed by. It appears that they only had gone for a brief New Year's holiday, (but didn't tell anyone - therefore passers-by could only conclude that they had gone out of business. Another case where a simple sign saying they would 'be back soon' would have paid dividends.) They have reopened and have continued where they left off...
SOI DEAD ARTISTS (Sukhumvit 33)
The new Dream Heaven Massage opened on schedule, just across the street and down a couple of doors from the old Dream Heaven Massage. Two things to note here - first, note that the new Dream Heaven has had its exterior sign altered so that the word, 'massage' does not appear. Secondly, the old Dream Heaven Massage (across the street) did not close.... but they were required to cover over the word, 'massage' on their exterior sign as well. As noted earlier, the sign ges.tapos are busily educating us on the "M-wo.rd" and how not to use it...
SOI DEAD
ARTISTS (Sukhumvit 33)
New Massage was also required by the heavy-handed gest.apos to remove the word, 'massage' from their exterior signage. Obviously, New is the same massage parlor it always was. An example of the how parochial, intra.ctable over-enfo.rcement of rules and regulations can make no sense at all.
SOI DEAD ARTISTS (Sukhumvit 33)
Joy, located on the 2nd level of S 33 Compact Hotel is yet again CLOSED.
The Pickled Liver British Pub has taped a most enigmatic sign to their front door. Closed for renovation? This falls into the "more-than-rumor, less-than-fact" category. Pardon us if we do a 'Wait-and-See' on this item...
The X-Size Massage appears to be closed - yet another indication that the Twilight Zone is sliding slowly into the abyss... We'll do a run-by next month to either confirm the closure - or reinstate...

Buckskin Joe Village (~ December 1988 to December 2006)
(Also known -originally- as Tobacco Road or Soi Rot Fai or, 'The Tracks', and later as Machim [Thai] and Soi Zero)
First of all, what, exactly, is "Gentrification"? The primary definition-of-old was, "The process of improving real property in an urban residential or commercial district through renovation, replacement and/or new construction to more closely conform to middle-class taste." However more recently the term has assumed, or has been assigned, a heap of connotative baggage arising from the so-called "unintended consequences" of this process.
In today's context, these localized real property improvements are, as would be expected, causing real estate values to increase, often dramatically. This, over time, causes lower income families and businesses to move out of the district into more affordable areas. As many of the original residents are unwilling, or financially unable, to relocate, animosities have grown - and occasionally flared. Further, as much of the lower income population being forced to relocate is often composed of ethnic or racial groupings, it is axiomatic that controversy has arisen. The term 'anti-gentrification' refers to the resistance to gentrification for these reasons.
The forcing of lower income homeowners and established businesses out of their home district has attracted the attention of local & state governmental bodies and activists alike. Longtime residents and commercial establishments claim this is a form of 'coerced community displacement', which is further exacerbated by real estate speculators who clamor to buy up properties to 'flip' them for a profit. On the other hand, the "gentry" refer to this gentrification process as a normal, private-sector form of 'urban renewal'; the upgrading of 'deteriorated' urban areas.
A case in point is El Sereno in the Los Angeles area. This suburb (and adjacent communities) has been experiencing unabated gentrification in recent years. This has resulted in stores and art galleries having been vandalized (primarily by graffiti), and picketed by anti-gentrification folk. While El Sereno is not (yet) overrun by craft-beer pubs, artsy galleries, or walking-streets teeming with 'cute' boutiques, they increasingly have been feeling the pinch. Among those affected by the 'unintended consequences' of this gentrification, -those first to feel directly the effects of rising costs- are the renters. Internet exposure by real estate websites such as Airbnb has contributed to the rental problem - as readily can be seen by the overwhelmingly negative narrative on the various blogsites.
Community-minded organizations on both sides of the gentrification fence have popped up. For example the El Sereno Against Gentrification group, and the pro-gentrification group, 'LA32 Neighborhood Council' have been going at it toe-to-toe (figuratively), each defending and rationalizing their respective positions on the ongoing gentrification debate.
Presumably unaffiliated with the El Sereno Against Gentrification group, local graffiti 'artists' have commenced a spraycan campaign against those homes and venues they see as part of the gentrification problem. For example, an outdoor advertisement placed by a real estate agent was tagged "gentrifier," his photo altered by spraycan to portray the Devil. In another incident, graffiti artists sprayed "Your house raises our rent," on a private dwelling. But the recent flare-up, the one that recently caught Media attention, is the recurrent "Fuck Gentrification" graffiti being sprayed on the homes of (what are derisively referred to as) 'transplants '.
In truth, 'gentrification' -by anyone's definition- is another word for 'modernization', and will happen -eventually- to every bit of habitable property on earth - save, perhaps, the Great Pyramids in Egypt. Nevertheless, that which has become evermore contentious in today's gentrification controversy is its comparatively rapid pace, the tactics used, and inattention to the 'unintended consequences' of these modernizations.
