Shark is one of the several Night Spots able to reopen on the rollback of the Emergency Decree last month.
'Covid Blockade' as used in our headline refers specifically to Thailand's closure of it's borders to all but essential individuals and returnee citizens. Most countries also use the Covid Blockade as the primary method of isolating the population to prevent the contraction of the CoV-19 disease (to state the obvious). Thailand, uniquely, has used the Covid Blockade as an integral part of its efforts to control the spread of the Virus - by nearly 100%. As a result, Thailand has not seen a "2nd Wave" as have so many other nations. Nevertheless, it appears that the 2nd Wave, which hit much of the globe on or about the beginning of August (our last month's report) is apparently starting to subside in most areas/ countries. Please see the graphs below.
We are often asked why the MIDNITE HOUR is concentrating so much of its editorial efforts on reporting the Coronavirus pandemic. Simply put, border closure has created the greatest upheaval of the expat/ tourist Night Entertainment Industry in its entire history. No other Night Entertainment issue comes close to the significance or magnitude of the deleterious effect the closing of the borders has had on that segment of the entertainment industry geared toward foreign custom. As we quipped last month, "As the Coronavirus goes, so goes Thailand's Nightlife".
Since the Government relaxation on Night Entertainment, a number of Nitespots have reopened. While there are a few Nitespots doing reasonably well, the rest are hanging on from month-to-month. Nevertheless, a number of the Nitespots that have reopened over the last 2 months have already had to close again. Not to mention, there are a number bars that have yet to reopen since the original March closures. The Government's allowing the reopening of the bars was not the Night Entertainment Industry's "answer" to their problems - the Industry, as a whole, struggles to stay afloat. Phuket may soon be deemed a 'Quarantine Island', allowing
foreign tourism - 'The canary in the coal mine', so to speak. Since the implementation of the Emergency Decree in March, there have been a number of phased 'rollbacks' (Phases 1 through 5), each time providing the citizenry with more freedom of movement and access. The oft mooted Phase 6 rollback has not materialized, despite the frequent announcements in the Press. Instead the Government has continued to tweak existing restrictions and allowances. The one discussion which is gaining currency is that of making Phuket a 'Quarantine Island', where vetted tourism will be allowed (the 'Canary in the Coal Mine', so to speak). This will presumably require a negative Coronavirus test and/or a positive Coronavirus antibody test, possibly at each end of the journey. Note: this has not yet been approved, let alone put into effect. Wait and see.... In summation, all credit due to the Thailand Government for their handling of the Coronavirus Pandemic to date. The various restrictions implemented under the Emergency Decree and the incremental rollback of those restrictions has 'shown the way' as to what works, and that which does not - particularly in regards to 'isolation' and 'control'. Final Note: Phase 5 conditions, and the subsequent elaborations thereon, for controlling the spread of the Coronavirus are still in effect in Thailand (as outlined in our previous issues).
*We note the local Thai Night Entertainment Areas are open and doing reasonably well, as, of course, their main source of custom is not foreign tourism. (Examples of local Thai Nitespot Areas: Sri Nakarin South, Soi Thonglor, Soi Udomsuk, Soi Ekamai, RCA.)

Let the September 2020 Follies
begin-
Bangkok's Night Entertainment Venues, closed down in late March, have officially been allowed to reopen since 1 July. This month, as was the case last month, we have seen a number of Nitespots reopen, and several that have gone out of business permanently. Additionally, we have noted in our last two monthly surveys that a number of Venues will close on some days, and will be open on others (without putting signs out front to inform customers of temporary closures). In such cases, we will report those venues as "closed", however, during this time of 'Coronavirus Crunch', we will not remove them from our monthly surveys, and duly record any eventual reopenings.
As they were advertising last month, the King's Group reopened King's Castle (far left in the photo below), King's Castle 1 and King's Castle 2 (conjoined in the center of the photo). At the right of the pic is the SuperStar (featured last month). Patpong 1 Road is reopening (post-decree lockdown) much slower than either Nana Plaza or Soi Cowboy - it is still essentially in darkness. Note - Open last month, but closed this month is the upstairs Takara Massage.

Up on The Ramp the Spanish Eyes found themselves in the wind... Sad to see them go into the night... They were replaced by the unusually named M Nine. May the M Nine never know the dark side of bright city lights...
PATPONG 2
Up on The Bridge, the ever popular Black Pagoda is now offering a unique and interesting membership, or 'loyalty program', to appeal to the expat nightcrawlers among us. Since we are going to be there in any case, why not?
PATPONG 2
The Glamour has had its share of ups and downs in its very few years of existence. Presently, it is in yet another 'downer'. Expect it to reopen ..... one of these months...

There were no new openings or closings on Soi Cowboy this past month, however we note (for the second time) that the so-called 'Iranian Bars' are still closed. They were noted opening and closing sporadically even before the Emergency Decree, and to date have yet to reopen. As of this writing, we are removing those bars from 'the inventory' : Club Rio (Our Place), Spice Girls, Midnite, Deja Vu and the Kiss-Sahara. Should any of these Nitespots come back on line, we shall be pleased to make note in a coming issue...

It looks like The Australian is not only closed, but gone missing. It also looks like the Bafros Bar & Lounge (which was already open upstairs) is taking over the entire premises. Bafros is currently still open, but its "Wait And See" on whether or not they take over the downstairs portion.... Gotta let the train roll on....
SOI AMBASSADOR
(Sukhumvit Soi 11)
The Lush Rooftop has taken over from the Market Rooftop, which closed almost 2 months ago. Lets hope they are dealt all aces and faces....
SOI AMBASSADOR
(Sukhumvit Soi 11)
Defying common sense, the Tewly Cocktail bar beer opened 2 months ago on the now vacant land across from the Ambassador Hotel. Last month, defying gravity itself, they had doubled in size. This month, there are four, count 'em, four bar beers in a row. The bar beer on the left consists only of chairs and tables on the sidewalk side, and an orange Volkswagen bar van parked in the back, providing the beverages.... Welcome them all to the neon jungle...

SOI 7 PLAZA
(AKA "Nana Plaza @ 7")
There were no changes in the bar survey for Soi 7 Plaza, but we are including some unique 'signage' of the Ida 789 bar beer (which opened newly last month, but at that time we didn't have a photo...) Khun Ida has painted the bar name on a number of barrels.... We wish them constancy...
SOI 7 PLAZA
If the signage of the Hideaway looks familiar to any of you, its because it is the same Hideaway that was hidden away at the back of Queen's Park Plaza for several years. This time around, they opened the gates at the back end of Soi Pan Pan (thereby extending the Soi by another 40 feet) and they are now hiding back there. Welcome them back to the neon circus...
SOI DEAD

SOI DEAD
ARTISTS (Sukhumvit 33)
Last month we had the wrath of the proprietor of the Chrome Bar falling down upon our heads. We noted on our site that they were closed (they were), but they swore up and down they were open and in high gear. We replied as politely as possible that we had a time/dated photo of the Venue showing it to be very much 'closed', but that we would be pleased to put up a photo of Chrome Bar this month. Well, here is the photo we promised.... The only niggly little detail is it is still closed (as of 31 August @ 10:49 hours).
SOI EDEN (Sukhumvit 7 / 1)
The sister bar to the Chrome Bar is the Wood Bar. They were open a couple of months ago, but this time around they were very obviously closed. On our monthly surveys, we are no different than any prospective customer - and if we see a Venue closed, and no note of explanation - such as "Staff Holiday" or "Closed until Date", then we can only conclude that the closed bar is indeed 'closed'. Any other explanation would be inaccurate...
