Rarely does Bangkok Eyes begin an issue with an article featuring graffiti. But because of a chance visit to one of the oldest parts of Chinatown we happened across a mother-lode of original graffiti and murals that we felt had to be shared...

TALAT NOI
The particular part of Chinatown is referred to as Talat Noi, or 'Small Market'. It has been there on the waterfront since before Bangkok was divided into districts and sub-districts, and as a result, was not given a proper 'Administrative' designation. It is neither a formal district or moo baan. Neither is it a 'market' in today's sense. it is more commonly understood to be a chum chon, or 'community'.
On the easing of Covid-19, the Tourist Authority of Thailand (and tour agencies) were looking for something 'new' (as yet unexplored by the mainstream), and they struck 'tourist gold' with Talat Noi. There you will find some of the oldest wooden structures remaining in the city, along with (locally) famous duck kwei tiew shops covered in photos of generations of Chinese owners, new 'boutique' restaurants, as well as Chinese temples - one of which, hidden away, rivals the largest in Thailand, and an ancient Chinese 'community swimming pool', ad infinitum. Much more than can be explored in a single day. And of course, prolific graffiti - with a local flavor...
Below are a few other examples of Talat Noi's graffiti.
READER : Hi,
I'm curious about the expression 'Let the good times roll', which you use on your site at least once a month. The reason it popped up on my radar is I saw where Elon Musk used the same expression when texting on his takeover of Twitter. No offense, but I think its more than coincidence, and I don't think he is logging onto your site. So is there some etymological background on this?
Best,
MIDNITE HOUR:
We tend to agree - it's not likely Elon would consciously be reading Bangkok Eyes for any reason, let alone be sourcing one-liners from us. Although probably not 'etymological', there are a number of historical uses of the expression, to include songs by B.B. King, The Cars, and even a 1973 film, however the popularization of the expression goes waaay back to 1956 when Shirley & Lee released their 'single' recording of that name. Leaping into almost instant popularity on both sides of the color barrier, their infectious rendition soon made them America's "Sweethearts of the Blues". For you seekers of historical minutiae, a brief snippet of the original is found immediately below...
READER : Hello,
Is Soi 11 becoming Bangkok's Marrakesh? Walking the length of the lane with my wife, I counted 5 minivans selling marijuana. Or is this Reefer Madness now countrywide?
Rgds,
MIDNITE HOUR:
We counted seven mini-vans selling cannabis on that Soi, some claiming a portion of the sidewalk to set up outdoor tables and chairs for customers. We also saw another individual who brought his own stool and had rested a lottery ticket tray on a box, also displaying small vials of cannabis. We watched as three mem-farang fooled around with half a joint, trying to figure out how to re-light it - how hard could it be? Around the corner on Soi 11/1, we noted a shop with proper green-leaf neon signage. While readily available in-your-face cannabis is not unique to Soi 11, it seems to be the current market leader. If the government truly intended to score any serious tax revenue, as originally stated, they are losing out to the street vendors...
It looks like Domino Pizza is expanding. (We're not yet sure about what will be going on at the ground floor level, so we will be getting back atcha.) But right now, anything, to include a pizza parlor, that adds light and cuts the gloom in the Patpong 1 area is a good thing. Two more big bag shops have opened on Patpong 1 Road, further cutting through the darkness (not shown), but no new Night Entertainment Venues to report this month.
PATPONG 1
The Nippon-oriented Emperor Club located on the 5th level above the Shenanigans has closed. They will be relocating to Sukhumvit Soi 26. May they ride the vicissitudes...
The Black Pagoda Group (& participating Nitespots) were up to frightening fun and games for Halloween this year. (We didn't have space to list the other Venues getting in on the ghostly activities...) Let's rock some more...
What used to be a string of big bag and bric-à-brac stalls cluttering the entrance to Patpong 2 (Silom side) is now a brand new bar beer. When we passed by it was fully decked out for Halloween. For lack of any permanent signage, we are calling it Patpong Dangerous - from one of the murals on the south wall, (- Check this space for updates...) And, yes, it is one of the Black Pagoda group of bars. Let the good times roll...
Last month our survey just missed picking up the reopening of Club Rio. We note a colorful, dynamic upgrade to the façade. Modus operandi : 'Coyote / A Go-Go'. Welcome back to the same-old same-old.
SOI COWBOY
A few months back, the "Soi Cowboy" sign (Asoke side) was replaced. Below is a 'for-the-archives' photo...
Although some bars are doing better than others, Nana Plaza is now fully back in operation - Venue-wise. And more than enough customers to go around - as evidenced by the perpetual traffic jam out front...
NANA PLAZA
Venues in transition October 2022 through 1 November 2022 - not inclusive of the above :
*Red Dragon - NEW - (Newly named - last month, due to a lack of neon, we assumed it was part of the adjacent Mandarin. (It still is, but now managed under its own name.) Located on the 2nd level at the top of the escalator. Photos to follow. Welcome them to the fray..
The cozy The Tavern at the top of Subsoi Big Mango wins the Best Halloween Decorations Award. (We just made that up...) Nevertheless, great Halloween 'spirit'... Keep the party rolling...
SOI NANA - (SOI 4 SUKHUMVIT)
Venues that transitioned October through 1 November 2022 - not inclusive of the above.
Soi 22 had no less than 5 new Night Entertainment Venues open last month - something of a record for them. Not the least of which was the Absolute Bar. Located just past Subsoi Hana on the main Soi. Get down tonight.
SOI 22
Bar 112 was a surprise new entry on the Soi. Located on the main drag just before Subsoi Starlight. Welcome them as they give a roll to the dice...
SOI 22
Cupid Bar has taken over the reins from the on-again, off-again Singh Bar. Located midway into the Soi. Wish them luck as they throw their hat in the ring...
SOI 22
The Halo Sport Bar opened newly, deep in Subsoi Hana, two small sois past the Marriott Marquis Hotel. Welcome to partytown.
SOI 22
The Hang Loose pool bar has actually been open (most of the time) for about 6 months, but had never put up a sign - we were never sure if they were actually going to stake a claim. However, this last month, they did just that - see pic below. Located in Subsoi Starlight. May they continue to rock and roll...
SOI 22
Venues in transition October through 1 November 2022 - not inclusive of the above.
Down at the very back of Subsoi Havana Social, what was once the P.P. Beer Bar (adjunct to the massage parlor of that name), became The Vagabond, then the Yadong Potion. Each new iteration barely made ends meet. It has now become the La Paca (Ya Dong) and is suddenly very busy. (We think La Paca is Portuguese (Brazilian) for 'The Fool'...) But this sudden, new popularity is no accident - finally someone figured out what the long queue of farang could do while standing around waiting to get into the always-crowded Havana Social. Welcome to the machine...
SOI AMBASSADOR
(Sukhumvit Soi 11)
Formerly Mulligan's, it changed its name to Mulli's halfway into the campaign (there was/is already a Mulligan's on Khao Sarn Road). Then Mulli's closed down while the building got a sprucing-up. It is quite likely Mulli's will reopen before the New Year, then y'all can come on back....
SOI AMBASSADOR
(Sukhumvit Soi 11)
Venues that transitioned from October through 1 November 2022. -Not inclusive of the above.
Although the 'dust has settled' on the configuration of the Soi 7 Plaza (at least for the most part), what never seems to settle is Big B's Bar, which keeps on growing and popping up in new places. In the photo below, the new Big B's has expanded southward using the area formerly occupied by Boss. Only the area at the far right (photo below) does not belong to Big B.
SOI 7 PLAZA
SOI 7 PLAZA
Stronger was originally located on Soi 22 deep in Subsoi Starlight. After a brief closure, it relocated (a couple months back) to Soi 7 Plaza, but did not have a sign. May they keep on keeping on. Do what you do, do well...
SOI 7 PLAZA
We don't know what they've been doing right, but they've been doing it again... The We For You Bar was originally at the location shown in the below photo. Then when Covid began easing, they moved next door into the then-closed Rumors. This last month they expanded back into their old digs, now occupying both areas. It is perhaps the most popular Nitespot in Soi 7 Plaza. Don't you know what the night can do....?
SOI 7 PLAZA
Venues that transitioned from October through 1 November 2022.
*Long Shots - EXPANDED when the two remaining "islands" joined (see map)..
*Pookie - EXPANDED into vacant next door area.
*BIG B's - EXPANDED - Took over the long closed Boss next door.
*We For You - EXPANDED - Took over its original area that it previously moved out of.
*Thai Cannabis Club - NEW - Took over the old Twister 7 digs at the near corner.
The Japanese-oriented bar noted last month as newly opened - has closed... We'll give them the benefit of the doubt, and not drop them from the survey in the event they pop back to life next month. Located in Subsoi 4.
SOI DEAD ARTIST (Sukhumvit Soi 33)
An as-yet-named Massage Parlor just opened in the old Covid-closedFootjoy Massage. Located at the top of Subsoi Pan Pan. We should be able to get a better photo - with signage- next survey. Rub-A-Dub-Dub...
SOI DEAD ARTIST (Sukhumvit Soi 33)
Venues that transitioned from October through 1 November 2022. -Not inclusive of the above.
*Club Kitty & 33 Bangkan - CLOSED - Subsoi Pan Pan.
Our long-term goal is to create an historical record, an holistic view, of Bangkok'sNight Entertainment Scene. We have arbitrarily chosen "Ground Zero" as the end of WWII, when there were no active entertainment venues (remaining or new). '' serially (or catch-as-catch-can) endeavors to span Bangkok'sNight Scene from 'Ground Zero" through the years up to the present, and on into the future. Over time, we will capture and archive the 'rise and demise' of Night Entertainment Areas and Venues in a comprehensive, cohesive manner.
The Champagne Room in New Road Night Entertainment Area brought in the comedy magic act of Roger Coker and Arthur Brandon, known professionally as just Milo & Roger. "Time" tends to fade, or more often bury the past, but while they were performing they were regularly billed as "The greatest comedy magic act of the twentieth century". (And this was long before the end of the twentieth century...) They are credited with performing in virtually every type of Entertainment Venue - from Bangkok's hostess bars to carnivals, circuses, medicine shows, minstrel pitches, clubs, Broadway and television.
January 1966
Unless you are as old as some of the louts hanging around our offices, you will not remember The Deep River Boys. They were actually an American gospel music group (mid '30's - '80's), but occasionally slipped out of character to rip it up with some early R&B. And what better place to do so than Bangkok.... Although the members of the group came and went in later years, this 1966 gig at the Mikado on New Road was with the original group, headed up by Harry Douglass.
January 1966
It would otherwise seem curious that the popular Cafe De Paris would shell-out big advertising baht to wish someone happy birthday, however 'Apasra' (Apasra Hongsakula) was Thailand's (and Southeast Asia's) first Miss Universe, and was duly honored and celebrated by the Thai nation.
January 1966
The Oriental Hotel'sBamboo Bar has been bringing in top talent since the early '60's. In addition to bringing in great entertainment, the bar has also become a 'check-list item' for tourists.
January 1966
The Venice Turkish Bath was located in the Rajprasong / Rajdamri Roads area, which for a while looked like it would be competition to the Gaysorn Road Night Entertainment Area, located just around the corner. The Rajprasong / Rajdamri Roads area had a number of Nitespots in the early years, but never attained a 'critical mass', eventually fading away.
January 1966
The Orchid Room, which advertised mostly as a restaurant was yet another popular Nightclub in the Gaysorn Night Entertainment Area.
February 1966
One would be tempted to say the Mikado Bar on New Road was overblowing the fame, and perhaps the talent of their relatively unknown featured entertainment, however the Tiongco Brothers were, in their day, an international favorite, and remain so in the Philippines. They continue to entertain - mostly for the older generation who remember them from decades past. The inseparable "Fabulous Tiongco Brothers" are all now in their seventies.
February 1966
In earlier years it was not uncommon to find full-service, or near-full-service 'barber shops' in hotels - providing massage and turkish baths, etc.
February 1966
Newspapers covered the opening of Pretty, the newest Massage Parlor / Turkish Bath on New Petchburi Road (Petchburi Extension).
February 1966
The Tokyo Turkish Bath was one of the 'early birds' on New Petchburi Road (soon to be dubbed 'The Golden Mile').
February 1966
Lionel Hampton, famed vibraphonist, percussionist, band leader and recording artist, known for his mainsream jazz, swing, 'big band' and blues, was in Thailand for a limited tour, this time at the Cafe De Paris.
March 1966
Patpong's Keynote Club reopened March '66, as can be seen from the above, but what they didn't tell us was they were expanding - take note of their address: '81 - 85', which made it then three shophouses wide...
March 1966
The Can Can quickly became a popular Nitespot in New Road Night Entertainment Area. If we are not reading too much into the photo, the Can Can and the nearby Oasis were owned by the same people...
March 1966
The Aladdin carried forward the successful Rogger Herrera Quintet into the new year. The Aladdin set the tone for Patpong'sSunday afternoon diversions.
March 1966
In the mid-sixty's, the nudes hanging on Max's Lounge walls were the talk of Patpong Road. Little could anyone have known that in another twenty years nudes would be working in many of Patpong's Venues...

Who was New - And Who was Through
in the Expat Night Entertainment World
This month Bangkok Eyes discontinues this sub-column as it is duplicated in our Archives. In this and future issues we will provide herein the link to the relevant month of 20 years ago - (which will provide greater in-depth coverage to historians and long-time visitors & residents.)
Swiss hero Adrian von Bubenberg and his son, Adrian von Bubenberg II, travelled to Jerusalem in the late 1400's, visiting the site of King David's Tomb on Mount Zion (in those days, a monastery and a traveller's hostel). How do they know this? Amongst 40 other bits of graffiti scrawled in charcoal on the wall of the tomb is that medieval knight’s name and family emblem. The Israel Antiquities Authority has no immediate plans to remove the graffiti. To read the complete story Click here : Miami Herald < link >.
