This month we feature"Feelm", something we usually relegate to footnotes. Yet it was, and is, a real part of the Bangkok Night Entertainment Scene. Our occasional 'historical sorties' back in time have highlighted both the films of the day and the grand old Bangkok theaters. ..And, as you will see, most of both have fallen into the dustbin of history. However, it is interesting to see how many of those old films and theaters have 'made it to the future' - how many have stood the test of time. (Having said that, our nostalgic memories of those old cinematic experiences need be tempered with the fact that smoking was allowed in theaters, ushers brought Singha beer to paying viewers - and food was brought in, to include freshly grilled squid, giving the theaters-of-the-day an 'aroma' of their own... )

The Great Race (1965) was a triple Acadamy Award winner (Effects, Sound, Cinematography-Color). back when the Acadamy Awards meant something... A footnote: Henry Mancini was nominated for the musical score. Surprisingly, some relatively new movies began arriving in Thailand during this period.
April 1966
Lord Jim (1965), based on the classic novel by Joseph Conrad, was a double-BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) nominee, but didn't bag an Oscar on the other side of the pond... However In London, this film was THE Royal Film Performance for 1965, with Queen Elizabeth II attending.
April 1966
During this period, the Thai Film industry was expanding rapidly, often featuring actors from abroad. Burengnong The Conqueror was a popular Thai film of the day.
April 1966
That Man In Istanbul (1965) won recoginiton and awards in it's home country of Spain. An obvious 007 spoof, it had its serious and humorous moments. Starring the up-and-coming lead male star of the day, Horst Buckholz.

Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines (1965), a solid British comedy, took home a number of awards, including an Oscar for Best Writing, Story and Screenplay.
April 1966
The Monkey Goes West (1966) was not a comic kung-fu pic, but rather a film made of a 16th Century Chinese novel. In this case, 'going West' was a Buddhist monk and a coterie of magicians travelling to India from China, for the purpose of obtaining Buddhist sutras. Did anyone catch Run Run Shaw's play on words - 'monkey' re 'monk'? Out of Hong Kong, of course...
April 1966
The Amorous Adventures of Moll Flanders (1965), based on Daniel Defoe's 18th Century Moll Flanders, was meant to be a take-off of Tom Jones (the film), but, while popular, never rose to great acceptance. Often cited for her outstanding performance was Angela Lansbury. Even with the popular Kim Novak as 'Moll" it was given but a single BAFTA nod...
April 1966
Horror of Dracula (1958) was one of the earlier (of several) Dracula films. This 1958 version starred Christopher Lee as Count Dracula, often cited as 'the most terrifying' of the blood-suckers.

UDORN 60's - 70's REVISITED
READER :
Hey Man, interesting take on Udorn's nitelife. I was in Udorn, 432 AMS, 1973/4. Saw plenty of "missions" over Susie Wong. Don't forget to include the Golden Palm, located at the front fate INSIDE the airbase... It was a weird 'n wild period in history. I relish the experience, yet it has had a damaging effect on my persona.
MIDNITE HOUR:
We still receive feedback such as yours on our
Udorn Thani in the 60's & 70's < link> article. Since the original article (August 2018) we've got hold of a few more interesting items which we should publish in a follow-up article. Your information on the Susie Wong and the Golden Palm should definitely be included. We will attempt to source photos. We are also attempting to get a photo of the small bar, reportedly an Air America bar, just outside the main gate. It had two signs, one reading "First Chance" when exiting the base, and the other sign read "Last Chance" when returning to base. Kindly let me know if you have any info on these. Below is a photo of the NCO Club, also inside the base - you may recall it. Thanks for writing in.
WHEN 'AI' IS TOO 'REAL'
READER :
Had a chance to dig deeper into your post. The recent advances in AI are quite creepy, as there are so many ways it can be used to mold society’s thoughts; opinions; etc., which makes me think this is too much concentrated power. Society needs a counter-measure. ...
READER :
Your Feb article on Artificial Intelligence seems to have been well-timed. I noticed that at almost the same time, the Western world's media were and still are all a-buzz on OpenAI and all the others, most of which you mentioned in your article. A leading tech site noted that Artificial Intelligence is currently the hottest topic in technology. Your tongue in cheek (?) suggestion of a virtual A Go-Go bar can't be far behind. This surely can't end well...
MIDNITE HOUR:
The timing of the AI article was actually a coincidence. I had been discussing the AI possibilities with a computer-wizard friend for a couple of months - just possibilities. I finally decided to research the subject in detail, at least as it pertained to what was available on line to the average-joe web surfer. ...Could I, for example, make an AI 'Thai Smile' for Bangkok Eyes? The answer was, 'Yes," and it was way too easy... and way too much fun.. And the feedback has still been coming in.
Thanks for reading and for writing in.
Don't hesitate to send your questions and comments - always welcome.

PATPONG 1
Last month we saw no new growth on Patpong 1, but were encouraged that the Twilo Live was preparing to open (they had turned on their decorative outside lighting). This month we note that the exterior lighting has been removed entirely and the premises are derelict. "Another one bites the dust"... Patpong 1 in it's current configuration, where half the street is street vendors and the other half is food vendors and an outdoor food court, will almost certainly not survive as a Night Entertainment Area.
PATPONG 1
PATPONG 2
As can be seen, good things continue to happen at Delaney's. May they continue to shine...
PATPONG 2
The Paddy Field managed to wait out the Covid crisis, returning with live music - just as in times past. So it is difficult to see why they have suddenly fallen afoul of the fates.. Looking through a side window, we see chattel removed and trash on the floor - they've definitely faded into the heat.
PATPONG 2
Up on The Ramp, the Qeen 501 have popped back out of their crypt and rolled out the red carpet. Welcome them back to the same-old same-old.
PATPONG 2
SOI COWBOY
Rainbow A Go-Go, as promised, have switched on the neon and rolled out the barrel. They took over (almost) all of what was the pre-Covid Kiss Sahara. May they ride the vicissitudes long and hard...

NANA PLAZA
Normally the ' nostalgia factor' causes one to remember things slightly larger, slightly rosier than the present. But we can't say that about Nana Plaza Night Entertainment Area. Pre- Covid, the only time we saw Nana Plaza this busy was on New Year's Eve - now it's every night. When we walked in the other night, the place was so packed the crowd noise was deafening. Only on circuiting the Plaza on the 3rd level was it quiet enough to carry on the semblance of a conversation...
NANA PLAZA

Up on the 2nd level, the Stockings have been displaying their physical sign as before, but have been running 'Wonderland' on their electronic sign. Take your pick. Or take both. Photo to follow. May they keep on keeping on...

SOI NANA
Last month we boldly announced the demise of the beerless L-Seven Cafe Beer. To our surprise, it has reopened bigger and better than before - and they are now serving beer. Lots of comfortable outdoor seating. Welcome them back to the Big Uneasy...
SOI NANA - (SOI 4 SUKHUMVIT)
The Mani Bar & Grill was having a hard time remaining open... so the closure (and removal of chattel) was no surprise. Better luck on the flip side...
SOI NANA - (SOI 4 SUKHUMVIT)
The Swan Snooker and Pool lasted about a month - about as long as the other 2nd level Nitespots the Swan Group have tried to get up and running at that location.... It should be interesting to see what they have next month. We'll keep you posted.
SOI NANA - (SOI 4 SUKHUMVIT)
It looks like the Charmming Massage has finally given up the ghost. Ashes to ashes, so be it then... Located in Sub-soi Big Mango.

The sometimes-open Hugs Bar Karaoke was open last month, so therefore it is closed this month - as has been the historic record of their (non) performance...

The Otto Bar & Bistro at the top of the Soi has become just Otto Bar. Status quo ante - modus operandi unchanged...
SOI 22
The interestingly named Rocky BB's Chill Bar and the upstairs Uncle Junior's have taken over the Hang Out lock, stock and chrome barstools. Welcome Rocky and Tony as they give a roll to the dice...
SOI 22
A number of Soi 22's street bars have become a 'permanent' fixture once again. Of course this could all change with the imminent opening of the EmSphere mega-mall...
SOI 22
The short-lived Nila Bistro have apparently found a way out from under it all. Signage removed, doors darkened, hopefully they have found greener pastures...

AMBASSADOR
Hillary 3 have taken over the empty shophouse recently vacated by Ava, thereby doubling their frontage. (Area at the right in the photo below.) Long life in these ineresting times...
SOI AMBASSADOR
(Sukhumvit Soi 11)
Last month we noted the new Gossip open bar in the group of temporary bars and restaurants across from the Ambassador Hotel. This month we noticed an additional bit of neon : ' Bitch'. This was the sign that previously hung over what is now Big B's in 7 Center Point Night Entertainment Area ( Soi 7 Annex). We don't yet know if this is a 'transition', or perhaps another new bar in the making. We'll get back atcha.

SOI 7 PLAZA
(And the Soi 7 Bier Garten)

The Night Entertainment Area we have been calling Soi 7 Plaza has just recently been given a new (and official) name : 7 Center Point. For the interim, until everyone gets used to the change in names, we will use both when appropriate.
SOI 7 PLAZA

The We For You bar facing Soi 7 has given over their innermost area to the brand new Phu Wiang Bar. Both bars continue to rock. Let the good times roll...

SOI DEAD ARTISTS
We note that the Pan Pan Subsoi is now operating at full strength. A mix of Japanese and ' other' venues. A pic for the Archives.
SOI DEAD ARTIST (Sukhumvit Soi 33)
SOI EDEN
Soi Eden (Soi 7/1 Sukhumvit) - they are keeping busier than usual in this post-Covid tourism 'rush'. Another pic for the Archives.

Traces of Bangkok's Early Years
This month Midnite Hour highlights Bangkok's June 1966 Night Entertainment Scene. A number of 'A List' stars making their way East, many of whom we had no itea had ever come to The Kingdom during their active years..
No jazz afficionado will NOT recognize Billy Eckstine - but what will surprise many is that he toured Bangkok in 1965. For those too young to remember, he was a jazz singer and bandleader during the bebop / swing era. Eckstine was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award posthumously. His recording of "I Apologize" won the 1999 Grammy Hall of Fame Award. He was an inspiration to singers like Johnny Hartman, Lou Rawls, and a host of others. June1966
According to Nitelife columnist Bernard Trink, a long (financial) negotiation preceded Pat Boone's performances in Thailand in 1966. (And noting the additional sponsors reflected on the advertisement, it looks like they, jointly, came up with the required cash.) We note among the locations for purchasing tickets was the Naturist A Go-Go... (Yes, you read that correctly, and yes, it was June 1966....)

Although we see some advertising for the Peninsula Hotel, it never became one of the major Night Entertainment spots in Bangkok. The Krung Thong Night Club will remain but a remote bit of Bangkok Nightlife trivia...

The De Castro Sisters were a popular American singing group, originally from Cuba. They began as a Latin-flavored trio, eventually coming to the U.S.A - protegees of Carmen Miranda. They quickly became 'Americanized', adding comedy to their routines. They had a number of popular hit records in the mid 1950s and '60's... June 1966

Many remember, or believe they remember, that it was hard to find something to eat on the Patpong's in the early days - recalling it was Mizu's or nothing. But this was quite far from accurate. In addition to Dukes on PP2 (mentioned last month) there was the Keynote, Bobby's Hotdogs, the Venue on the corner of Silom and PP1 (which changed hands a couple of times), and this month we note Burger House. (Not to mention that some of the other Nitespots would send out for food if asked.)

Wilma Reading got her singing start in 1959 after singing for friends at a Brisbane, Australia jazz club. Her unique vocal talents were immediately recognized, and (to make a long story as short as we can), it wasn't long before she performed on The Tonight Show (Johnny Carson's), had a residency at NYC's Copa' and was touring with Duke Ellington. Later, in 1974 she played in the West End production of Show Boat, taking over from Cleo Laine. She has performed with the national orchestras of Belgium, the Netherlands, Iceland and Germany and toured with the Moscow Symphony Orchestra. She appeared at The London Palladium and performed for BBC TV. (This is the shortlist..) The Rama Hotel was on Silom Rd. at Mahasaek Rd.

Italian born Toni Dalli moved to Yorkshire, England at the age of sixteen to work in the coal mines. There he sang locally to much acclaim, and on finally obtaining citizenship, his career began to skyrocket. He quickly moved to London, and from there to the USA (Ed Sullivan Show), and Hollywood's Moulin Rouge. He recorded with EMI, Decca and Capitol Records. Additionally, he had his own TV show in Los Angeles. At the time of his death in 1959 he was to star in the film, 'The Mario Lanza Story', which subsequently was never released.

After Max's Bar became well known for the (then risque) nude art on the walls, he began including it in his ads. While it wasn't necessary (a 'regulars' bar - everyone already knew), it is of interest that it was appearing in the local publications... June 1966
The term, 'Turkish Bath' was another name for today's 'steam & cream' massage parlors. The Venice Turkish Bath was in the 'Rajprasong Shopping Center', which was where Central World, Big C, etc., are now located.
