BANGKOK EYES PRESENTS -
|
|
This month we feature"Feelm", something we usually relegate to footnotes. Yet it was, and is, a real part of the Bangkok Night Entertainment Scene. Our occasional 'historical sorties' back in time have highlighted both the films of the day and the grand old Bangkok theaters. ..And, as you will see, most of both have fallen into the dustbin of history. However, it is interesting to see how many of those old films and theaters have 'made it to the future' - how many have stood the test of time. (Having said that, our nostalgic memories of those old cinematic experiences need be tempered with the fact that smoking was allowed in theaters, ushers brought Singha beer to paying viewers - and food was brought in, to include freshly grilled squid, giving the theaters-of-the-day an 'aroma' of their own... )

Let the Follies begin-
Last month we saw no new growth on Patpong 1, but were encouraged that the Twilo Live was preparing to open (they had turned on their decorative outside lighting). This month we note that the exterior lighting has been removed entirely and the premises are derelict. "Another one bites the dust"... Patpong 1 in it's current configuration, where half the street is street vendors and the other half is food vendors and an outdoor food court, will almost certainly not survive as a Night Entertainment Area.
PATPONG 1
As can be seen, good things continue to happen at Delaney's. May they continue to shine...
PATPONG 2
The Paddy Field managed to wait out the Covid crisis, returning with live music - just as in times past. So it is difficult to see why they have suddenly fallen afoul of the fates.. Looking through a side window, we see chattel removed and trash on the floor - they've definitely faded into the heat.
PATPONG 2
Up on The Ramp, the Qeen 501 have popped back out of their crypt and rolled out the red carpet. Welcome them back to the same-old same-old.
PATPONG 2
Rainbow A Go-Go, as promised, have switched on the neon and rolled out the barrel. They took over (almost) all of what was the pre-Covid Kiss Sahara. May they ride the vicissitudes long and hard...
SOI COWBOY
Normally the 'nostalgia factor' causes one to remember things slightly larger, slightly rosier than the present. But we can't say that about Nana Plaza Night Entertainment Area. Pre-Covid, the only time we saw Nana Plaza this busy was on New Year's Eve - now it's every night. When we walked in the other night, the place was so packed the crowd noise was deafening. Only on circuiting the Plaza on the 3rd level was it quiet enough to carry on the semblance of a conversation...
NANA PLAZA
Up on the 2nd level, the Stockings have been displaying their physical sign as before, but have been running 'Wonderland' on their electronic sign. Take your pick. Or take both. Photo to follow. May they keep on keeping on...
NANA PLAZA
Last month we boldly announced the demise of the beerless L-Seven Cafe Beer. To our surprise, it has reopened bigger and better than before - and they are now serving beer. Lots of comfortable outdoor seating. Welcome them back to the Big Uneasy...
SOI NANA - (SOI 4 SUKHUMVIT)
The Mani Bar & Grill was having a hard time remaining open... so the closure (and removal of chattel) was no surprise. Better luck on the flip side...
SOI NANA - (SOI 4 SUKHUMVIT)
The Swan Snooker and Pool lasted about a month - about as long as the other 2nd level Nitespots the Swan Group have tried to get up and running at that location.... It should be interesting to see what they have next month. We'll keep you posted.
SOI NANA - (SOI 4 SUKHUMVIT)
It looks like the Charmming Massage has finally given up the ghost. Ashes to ashes, so be it then... Located in Sub-soi Big Mango.
SOI NANA - (SOI 4 SUKHUMVIT)
A For-The-Archives pic of the Circus signage....
SOI KATOEY (Silom Soi 4)
The sometimes-open Hugs Bar Karaoke was open last month, so therefore it is closed this month - as has been the historic record of their (non) performance...
SOI KATOEY (Silom Soi 4)
The Otto Bar & Bistro at the top of the Soi has become just Otto Bar. Status quo ante - modus operandi unchanged...
SOI 22
The interestingly named Rocky BB's Chill Bar and the upstairs Uncle Junior's have taken over the Hang Out lock, stock and chrome barstools. Welcome Rocky and Tony as they give a roll to the dice...
SOI 22
A number of Soi 22's street bars have become a 'permanent' fixture once again. Of course this could all change with the imminent opening of the EmSphere mega-mall...
SOI 22
The short-lived Nila Bistro have apparently found a way out from under it all. Signage removed, doors darkened, hopefully they have found greener pastures...
SOI 22
Hillary 3 have taken over the empty shophouse recently vacated by Ava, thereby doubling their frontage. (Area at the right in the photo below.) Long life in these ineresting times...
SOI AMBASSADOR
(Sukhumvit Soi 11)
Last month we noted the new Gossip open bar in the group of temporary bars and restaurants across from the Ambassador Hotel. This month we noticed an additional bit of neon : 'Bitch'. This was the sign that previously hung over what is now Big B's in 7 Center Point Night Entertainment Area (Soi 7 Annex). We don't yet know if this is a 'transition', or perhaps another new bar in the making. We'll get back atcha.
SOI AMBASSADOR
(Sukhumvit Soi 11)
SOI 7 PLAZA
(And the Soi 7 Bier Garten)
The Night Entertainment Area we have been calling Soi 7 Plaza has just recently been given a new (and official) name : 7 Center Point. For the interim, until everyone gets used to the change in names, we will use both when appropriate.
SOI 7 PLAZA
The We For You bar facing Soi 7 has given over their innermost area to the brand new Phu Wiang Bar. Both bars continue to rock. Let the good times roll...
SOI 7 PLAZA
We note that the Pan Pan Subsoi is now operating at full strength. A mix of Japanese and 'other' venues. A pic for the Archives.
SOI DEAD ARTIST (Sukhumvit Soi 33)
Soi Eden (Soi 7/1 Sukhumvit) - they are keeping busier than usual in this post-Covid tourism 'rush'. Another pic for the Archives.
SOI EDEN (Sukhumvit 7 / 1)
This month Midnite Hour highlights Bangkok's June 1966 Night Entertainment Scene. A number of 'A List' stars making their way East, many of whom we had no itea had ever come to The Kingdom during their active years..
No jazz afficionado will NOT recognize Billy Eckstine - but what will surprise many is that he toured Bangkok in 1965. For those too young to remember, he was a jazz singer and bandleader during the bebop / swing era. Eckstine was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award posthumously. His recording of "I Apologize" won the 1999 Grammy Hall of Fame Award. He was an inspiration to singers like Johnny Hartman, Lou Rawls, and a host of others. June1966
Wilma Reading got her singing start in 1959 after singing for friends at a Brisbane, Australia jazz club. Her unique vocal talents were immediately recognized, and (to make a long story as short as we can), it wasn't long before she performed on The Tonight Show (Johnny Carson's), had a residency at NYC's Copa' and was touring with Duke Ellington. Later, in 1974 she played in the West End production of Show Boat, taking over from Cleo Laine. She has performed with the national orchestras of Belgium, the Netherlands, Iceland and Germany and toured with the Moscow Symphony Orchestra. She appeared at The London Palladium and performed for BBC TV. (This is the shortlist..) The Rama Hotel was on Silom Rd. at Mahasaek Rd.
