BANGKOK EYES PRESENTS -

The Midnite Hour has been on the fence for months as to whether Soi 8 Sukhumvit was functionally a self-sustaining expat Night Entertainment Area. Our criteria, admittedly subjective, has nevertheless kept us consistent - is the grouping of Nitespots generally 'contiguous' (?), are there enough Venues to attract customers specifically for an evening of "Night Entertainment", and not just a meal or a foot massage? - In other words, has it reached a self-sustaining "Critical Mass" as an entertainment area?
SOI 8 Sukhumvit
Since our last visit this January, we have seen that new Venues have opened, making it virtually impossible to deny that Soi 8 has indeed reached Critical Mass. We have therefore added this Night Entertainment Area to our monthly surveys, and will be keeping all advised of changes in the Soi 8 Scene.
Continuing below is a brief pictorial of a number of Soi 8 Nitespots, each of which can be keyed to the map above.

Dave is BACK...
Let the Follies begin-
The unnamed Venue of questionable services at the top of the darkened stairway beside Thigh Bar is now the unnamed Venue of questionable services at the top of a brightly lit stairway beside Thigh Bar. May they persevere...
PATPONG 1
We can confirm last month's street gossip - the old King's Castle 1 has been combined with King's Castle 2. (The new King Castle 1 remains open across the street...)
PATPONG 1
We note with regret that after nearly endless renovations, Mizu's Kitchen has reopened as just another big-bag shop. Oh, well....
PATPONG 1
Opening only last September, the SOL, or Summer Of Love (file photo below) has drifted off into the night... Should they reappear we will add them back on roll call...
PATPONG 2
The short-lived The Bar Of Yahoo (opening last August) has gone the way of the Dromornithidae. May they find more prosperous digs...
PATPONG 2
There were no Nitespots opening or closing on Soi Cowboy the last month, so we are inclosing a pic of the Soi Asoke entrance - one for the archives.
SOI COWBOY
One of our regular informants on the Soi advises us not to hold our breath on the reopening of what was once the Lighthouse - it won't be opening for another three months... I guess they are going to wait for the next cool season... They also advise that Long Gun is now the poor-man's Crazy House vis-ŕ-vis performances... Also, according to our source, the three top Nitespots (busiest) are Crazy House, Baccara, and Country Road, in that order. Would be hard to refute...
SOI COWBOY
Opening up in the long-closed The Balcony Bar at the top of the escalator, (second level), is the brand-new Bunny Balcony. We'll attempt to get a better pic next issue....
NANA PLAZA
The Bar D. Mare is technically a wine bar with oysters, so we are giving it the benefit of the doubt as to whether or not it is a "Night Entertainment Venue". After all, it may work out to be a viable 'constellation' (another Trinkism)... Note they have an interesting open-air rooftop for limited seating. Let's see how this works out during the current rainy season... May the nightwinds blow kindly...
SOI NANA - (SOI 4 SUKHUMVIT)
After a several months-long renovation, the Valour Bangkok has rolled out the red carpet. We are guessing they are primarily a wine bar? They occupy what was the The Stranger digs. (The Stranger has moved deeper into the Soi.)
SOI KATOEY (Silom Soi 4)
Up on the 4th level, Beef., which opened only two months ago, has disappeared without a trace. A general observation - we have noted over the last year a number of businesses have either given up their (most modern) insistence on 'going cashless', or they have actually gone out of business. Could this be the reason Beef disappeared?
SOI KATOEY (Silom Soi 4)
The Avadee Massage in Subsoi Hana is the latest Venue to occupy these digs. The most recent occupant was Absolute which recently moved over to Subsoi Lemongrass, becoming "Absolute Bar". Avadee Massage are offering private room massage of the usual varieties. Welcome to partytown.
SOI 22 Sukhumvit Rd
The Bar Supreme is the new face on the long-running Survey bar. The new neon much more visible to passers-by. Located just past the Mariott Hotel Marquis in Subsoi Lemongrass. May they continue to prevail...
SOI 22 Sukhumvit Rd
Last month we previewed the Paradise Beach Bar, noting it would be opening very soon - which it did. It is located in the previous Panacea Bar digs. (Panacea, with their phalanx of bouncers-in-black roaming just outside the front entrance lasted from April 2023 through May 2023 before going belly-up.) Paradise Beach Bar, on the other hand, has pleasant greeters at the door and is already getting busy... Just sayin'...
SOI AMBASSADOR
(Sukhumvit Soi 11)
The Ambassador Hotel has been advertising Pulse Bangkok for some time. They are also now advertising Aces Bangkok, which we see will be 'COMING SOON'. We ventured inside see of we could pin down precisely when these two Venues would be opening. Their reply: "SOON!" ...Well, I guess we asked for that. We'll be keeping an eye out...
SOI AMBASSADOR
(Sukhumvit Soi 11)
Last month we covered the opening of "Lucky Whiskey Bar", noting they didn't yet have their neon nailed up. This month we note they have the signage up front and brightly - missing the "Whiskey". But no matter, they are keeping themselves busy... We noted no other changes in the 7 Center Point Night Entertainment Area.
7 CENTER POINT (Sukhumvit Soi 7)
Many of you long-term residents and regular visitors will remember The Office at the back of Subsoi 2 opposite Mojo's. This was way back when Soi Dead Artists still had dead artist bars. The Office closed in November 2016 (was it really that long ago?), and had lain dormant since then. But that was then, this is now. The Traveler's Tap Bar & Restaurant opened softly last month, this month nailing up their signage and going pedal to the metal. Let the good times roll...
SOI DEAD ARTIST (Sukhumvit Soi 33)
Toro Nuru opened newly in digs not formerly occupied by a Nitespot on the main Soi. (Nuru is a form of gel massage). Obviously very much oriented toward Japanese custom. May they continue to slip and slide...
SOI DEAD ARTIST (Sukhumvit Soi 33)
The Japanese Venue Lady Soda Snack Bar & Karaoke opened on the 3rd level at the back of Subsoi Pan Pan. Their sign so small one can hardly see it. (We might add the stairway up looks rather treacherous...) Welcome Lady Soda to partytown.
SOI DEAD ARTIST (Sukhumvit Soi 33)
We noticed no change in the inventory of Venues on Soi Eden (no new closures or openings). Below is a quick pic for the Archives...
SOI EDEN (Sukhumvit 7 / 1)
A This month Midnite Hour takes a look at Nightclubs offering live entertainment, located both in the bigger hotels and operating independently.
Savoy Bangkok Club, one of the early "clubs" on lower Sukhumvit Road, remained popular with their mix of local and Philippine entertainers. Located corner Soi 5 Sukhumvit.
