To start the New Year off, the Midnite Hour will (once again) try to catch up with our updating of maps of Bangkok's Night Entertainment Areas. First up on our list is Nana Plaza. Formerly (& legally) - literally 'Entertainment Center Nana Plaza', which translated to English - 'Nana Entertainment Plaza' (or colloquially, 'NEP').
In 1980Nana Plaza was a mini-mall of shops. At the entrance a shack stood where a currency exchange now sits. Its rear wall was the existing structure, an awning covered a tiny makeshift bar. A handmade sign read, Lucky Luke's. In 1982, when the widening of Sukhumvit Rd at Soi 16 began, it caused four bars to close. Three of those bars moved into Nana Plaza, and as other new bars quickly opened, it soon attained 'Critical Mass'. It is now Bangkok's busiest Night Entertainment Area.

Hello,
Your writeup of nightlife chronicles especially the reprint of some of the old Nite Owl articles takes me back. I recall he wrote for the World? I had no idea he went back that far, 1965?. More articles like this please.
Regards
MIDNITE HOUR:Bernard Trink (the 'Nite Owl') was for many years Entertainment Editor for the Bangkok World, later transferring to the Bangkok Post. Although his idiosyncratic, oft-controversial writings were popular with many readers, he had almost as many detractors. But both fans and detractors were avid readers - (Trink was the person his detractors loved to hate.) But the unintended consequence of his monstrous body of work over the decades (and a virtual dearth of others recording the entertainment scene), is he is nearly the sole-source of historical data on Bangkok Nightlife during its notorious heyday - spanning the early bar / club scene of the early '60's, the R&R scene and the ongoing A Go-Go revolution, and the upswing of "Sex-Tourism". Although our Traces section will draw heavily on his Nite Owl and other posts, we will not be duplicating his columns, as in our last month's edition.

When wondering about Patpong 2, you will have noticed the new bar, Atlas, that has taken the place of the now closed Sol. Atlas is made-up of defectors from the new /rebranded Tawan/The One on Soi 6. The guys there have had enough of the lousy new management driving away all the old customers from that long-running bar and decided to start their own place. ... So much for my assumption that the gayification of that end of Patpong 2 might go into reverse with the opening of Tanoshi. Whatever Patpong may end-up being, there is still plenty of life in that old bird yet. Your friend Vinai's refusal to throw-in the towel on the Dok venue being a good sign of that.
MIDNITE HOUR:Prior to Covid, Patpong 1 was on a slow downward spiral, while Patpong 2 had been making a slow come-back - both through the efforts of the Bua Luang group and the influx of gay bars from the Soi Twilight closure. Then came the extended closure from Covid, to be followed by the March 2023guilt-by-association witch-hunt which closed seven Patpong 2 Venues (where a single bar closure in Phu Ket for under-age dancers was seen as adequate cause by do-gooder authorities to close any Nitespot that had direct or indirect business dealings with its manager.) Since then, as you have mentioned, Patpong 2 has been slowly climbing out of the pits with new Venues such as Tanoshi and Atlas. For the record, the Doc Pub is now operating under the name Virgin-X.

Looking back in your archive I spotted a 2023 article on Khao San Road. Coincidentally I am back in Bangkok, and visited there with friends. The place has got plenty of action, it looks like there are a bunch of bars and clubs and drinking places, but I notice you only seldom cover that area. Are you planning regular updates like the other areas like Patpong or just every couple of years or so?
MIDNITE HOUR:Coming soon...!
Last month we mentioned that the space previously occupied by the King's Castle I was under renovation - and not absorbed by the adjacent King's Castle II as previously thought. At that time, we weren't sure what sort of venue it would become, but this month we see a "King's Castle" sign above the door. As there already is a "King's Castle" (at the old King's Corner), we can expect a name change... A wait-and-see item...
PATPONG 1
MAP
Last month we noted the recently closed SOL Club was undergoing rapid renovations, predicting an opening by New Year's. We didn't have to wait - the new Atlas Bar opened shortly after our report. As might be indicated by the signage, it is aimed at mostly gay clientele. May they sustain the vicissitudes..
The brand-new Vicky's Secret has rolled out the red carpet in time for the New Year. They have moved into one of the last two 'mom & pop' shops on Soi Cowboy. Let the good times roll.
SOI COWBOY
As is currently 'all the rage' on Soi Cowboy, Baccara has also done a major overhaul of their facade. While we kind of liked the old neon, this new signage is definitely eye-catching. Gotta let the train roll on...
Rainbow (as just 'Rainbow' with no number following) has finally made up its mind to go back to where it once was (recently the Pigtails). It has additionally incorporated the previously unused outdoor strip stretching into the corner. (The corner Venue now remains vacant.) Welcome them back - if they were ever really gone...
Kind thanks to J.B. for the pic.
The Players, a brand-new indoor-outdoor bar beer has opened up between Why Not? and B.K. Bar. Already looking busy... Let the nightgames begin...
SOI NANA - (SOI 4 SUKHUMVIT)
The bar that was is another bar that might be... The recently closed Golden Beer Bar located in the Nana Hotel frontage property, might become the Las Vegas... (Photo below.) The rumors of it becoming a Nana Plaza-style A Go-Go bar are attenuating somewhat, while 'someone' decides if-and-how to open... Yet another wait-and-see item. Some of you will recall Nana Plaza'sLas Vegas up on the 3rd level - June 2011 thru March 2013.
The Kiki has expanded to the adjacent property, left, so business must be good. Located in the Honey Plaza compound. Long life in these interesting times...
SOI 22 Sukhumvit Rd
The on-again, off-again Bit Style Fantasy Massage has done their final rub-a-dub-dub. They have answered Darwin's harsh call, after all... Located in Subsoi Starlight, renovations are underway.
Aloft, having completed their renovations two months ago, have reopened both Crave and Levels (but no sign of the WXYZ Bar of old). However, the new Levels is nothing like the pre-renovation Levels - as can be seen from their street-side LCD signage below. It seems a number of Soi Ambassador's Venues are adopting 'dancing', either "pole dancing" or "exotic dancing", being careful not to advertise it as A Go-Go... Better go upstairs and have a look...

SOI AMBASSADOR
(Sukhumvit Soi 11)
The One Two Two Club at the top of Subsoi Havana Social remains open. We were misled by a "For Sale" sign that was (and is not) taped to the front, and that they were closed when we passed by last month. May they continue to party...
SOI AMBASSADOR
(Sukhumvit Soi 11)
Closed since (approximately) Covid, the Nest is back at the Le Fenix Hotel. This time around, they have moved to the rooftop. Welcome back to the neon nights.
SOI AMBASSADOR
(Sukhumvit Soi 11)
A very long time coming the Aces night club has at long last rolled out the red carpet. It also absorbed what was to be its adjacent neighbor, the Pulse Bangkok (which is still a wait-and-see item). The Aces is yet another high-end club to open on Soi Ambassador, but being off the seething Soi 11 main thoroughfare (deep in the Ambassador Hotel grounds), it remains to be seen whether they will be able to attract custom.... Welcome them to the machine...
SOI AMBASSADOR
(Sukhumvit Soi 11)
The Saint Of Salt (Saint Rupert, perhaps?) Bistro & Bar has opened in the recently closed Ionic 2 Bar & Restaurant (next door to the Golden Giraffe). A most comfortable Venue, however if you are not one of the 'Lettered Generations' - where your eardrums have already been disco'd into oblivion, the music is waaaay too loud. It is even too loud across the street at the Villa Market... Welcome them as they give a roll to the dice...
SOI AMBASSADOR
(Sukhumvit Soi 11)
Gone, but not gone, the Finch (located at the entrance to Soi 11/1) has reopened after a top-to-bottom renovation. We're not too sure what the new 'Japanese connection' is all about, but we didn't see any Japanese among the customers (?)... Welcome them back to the briar patch...
SOI AMBASSADOR
(Sukhumvit Soi 11)
A new Venue, sandwiched between the Modern Teen and Zanzibar, is under construction / renovation. They are advertising for part time bar waiters. (No name as yet. We'll keep an ear to the ground, and get back atcha next round...)
A For-the-Archives pic of 7 Center Point. The bars facing Soi 7 are doing well - as for the bars inside the compound, not so much... Of the original gaggle of beer bars in the 'new' section (old Soi 7 Bier Garten), only three are left. Many of the unoccupied bar lots are filling up with old bar stools, trash and parked motorcycles - the area looks like a slum. Neither of the two upstairs areas above the Bier Garten area (the Balcony or the ST Rooms) has opened, and there is no indication they will. A few of the bars in the original 7 Center Point area are expanding into the Bier Garten area, occupying real estate in both old and new areas.
7 CENTER POINT (Sukhumvit Soi 7)
In the recently added-on Bier Garten area, the White Lion is the most recent bar beer to disappear into the night. Greener grass, ladies...
7 CENTER POINT (Sukhumvit Soi 7)
The usually busy Best Friends, located on the 'island', was closed down tighter than Alcatraz when we passed by the other evening. They hadn't removed their chattel, so we'll update again next round. (A wait-and-see item).
7 CENTER POINT (Sukhumvit Soi 7)
Big B's has yet again 'updated' their neon. They have also standardized - the same sign appears on their Soi Ambassador Venue. Get down tonight...
666 Class has renovated big-time. Upon acquiring the next door lot (previously Kamachi), they did a multi-story facelift and interior renovation - and are now back full-tilt. They join a growing number of 'large' specialty massage parlors populating Soi Dead Artists. We wish them constancy.
SOI DEAD ARTIST (Sukhumvit Soi 33)
Chairman, a Nitespot of to-be-determined format, has opened newly in Subsoi 3. "More of this as we hear of it." Welcome to the nightbeat.
SOI DEAD ARTIST (Sukhumvit Soi 33)
Sandwiched in between the ground level Hoshizora and Lady Soda on the 3rd level - is the 2nd level Sono, replacing the just closed Mikatsuki. It goes without saying that these Nitespots are aimed at Japanese custom. Welcome Sono to the trials-by-tears...
The brand-new Lollipop 1 has taken over the reins from the short-lived Matador Bar (open only last May), keeping their psychedelic mural. Welcome to bar beer roulette...
SOI EDEN (Sukhumvit 7 / 1)
A For the Archives pic of Green Room Bangkok, Soi Eden's own Blues Bar (live rock / blues). Best on weekends...
This month Midnite Hour continues to review Bangkok'sNightlife Scene offering live entertainment, both foreign and local, as found in the bigger hotels, as well as those entertainers performing in the smaller Venues.
After a brief renovation, the Thai Yonok opened August 1968 as a coffee shop, taking over the reins from the Dew Drop. The Dew Drop was a well-known late-late freelancer Venue, so when the Thai Yonok opened, they made sure they would not be mistaken for same, but rather they should be known as a "24 hour Coffee Shop". It didn't work - it soon became an even more well-known freelancer Venue, rivaling the Thermae Coffee Shop and the Nana Hotel Coffee Shop. Note the alternate spelling; 'Thai Yo Nok'
August 1968
The Aladdin Club was one of the earlier bars to open on Patpong 1 Road. (Alternately pronounced ; 'Al Laddin'.) Although popular in the '60's, very few, including the 'old hands' remember it today.
August 1968
Dakota Staton was an American jazz vocalist initially finding international acclaim with her hit song, "The Late, Late Show". The Leopard's Room at the Inter-Continental Hotel regularly had entertainment from the U.S. and Europe.
August 1968
Those 'old hands' of our era need no introduction to The Ventures (their hit musical numbers listed above). Carmen Pateña, from the Philippines, was known as "Asia's Ambassador of Songs". Her singing career peaked in the 1960s - 1970s. She would frequently appear on Seeing Stars on IBC. (1970s.) Later in life Carmen Pateña would appear with the Golden Divas in the Philippines.
August 1968
Austrian by birth, Paul Potassywas a prisoner of war in WWII, captured by the Russians. His repertoire consisted of only a few tricks - such as the Sympathetic Silks, the Eating Razor Blades, and the Torn and Restored Newspaper - which he presented with charm and intelligent wit. He performed mainly in top hotels and for exclusive events becoming an accomplished star of the international world of cabaret magic. The Tropicana was in the Rama Hotel deep in Silom Road.
August 1968
The Windsor on Surawong Rd (Not the hotel on Sukhumvit Rd.) had given over the management of their in-house entertainment to the popular Maurice Rocco.
August 1968
They advertised themselves as The Original Platters, which in fact they were (at least 3 of them). They thought it necessary, as through the years so many former Platters splintered off to start their own groups, and because there were so many imitation Platters popping up. The Platters were formed either in 1951, 1952 or 1953, depending on the historian one chooses to believe. They are still performing today as a group, however there has necessarily been many new members. The Sani Chateau was located in the Gaysorn Night Entertainment Area.
August 1968
The Montien Hotel's Montientong had live entertainment in the evenings, however in the afternoons they also had Tea Dances. The "Tea Dance" has a couple of claimed origins; the first is the English claim that Tea Dances evolved directly from their traditional Afternoon Teas. The second claim is the Tea Dance (thé dansant) was of French origin - a dance held in the summer or autumn in the late afternoon. J. Pettigrew traces its origin to the French colonization of Morocco. Take your pick. It remains curious that the Tea Dance somehow became 'an enduring thing' during the 1960's here in Thailand...
August 1968
This clipping from a one-off Bernard Trink filler. We know of no Rofeno or ReservoirNitespots - we will have to expand our explorations...
Graffiti Street, a popular graffiti website, has opened their first graffiti gallery - dedicated to "urban art". Located, specifically, at 25a West Street, Chichester, England. They've been ten years in the business of keeping those in-the-know in the "Street Art" world abreast of who was throwing what up where. To be sure, they are a business and hope to be successful through sales of limited edition screen prints of scores of iconic graffiti pieces, and the like. But even if one is not interested in purchasing, the gallery itself is worth a visit.
